Chapter 1

Pixie Petal grew a rose in her open palm, and no one saw it. Her feet were flower roots, thin and pale, and they gripped the dirt wherever she stood. She could pull color out of soil and coax buds from bare ground. But magic means nothing if no one watches it happen. She wanted everyone in the garden world to know that magic was real, that every dream had a place to bloom. So far, she had an audience of ants. She needed a place people already came to. She thought of the wishing well. People gathered there. They dropped coins into the dark water and whispered their hopes. Pixie Petal walked to it and pressed her roots against the mossy stones. She grew ivy up the wooden posts and made a ring of daisies bloom around the bucket. She waited all morning. Two people came, tossed coins, and left without looking up. They came to make wishes, not to watch them come true. The well was for private hope. Her wonder needed a stage, not a secret. Pixie Petal sat on the wet grass and thought. A stage. A place with room and light and reason to stay. Then she remembered the old greenhouse at the edge of the field. It stood wrapped in vines, its glass clouded and green. No one used it. No one cared. Pixie Petal knew that was the problem and the answer both. She walked there and pushed the rusted door. Inside, dead plants slumped in cracked pots. Light fell in gray streaks through the dirty panes. She found a level patch of packed soil in the center and stepped onto it. Her roots sank in. She reached for everything sleeping in that dead earth. She pulled hard. Vines uncurled and turned green. Flowers burst open along the walls in red and gold and blue. The clouded glass cleared as she cleaned it with climbing leaves. A whole garden woke inside the ruined greenhouse, and it glowed. Pixie Petal ran back to the well, where a few people lingered. "Come see," she said. "Come see something real." They followed her, curious. They stepped through the greenhouse door and stopped. Flowers hung from the ceiling. The air smelled sweet and alive. One woman pressed a hand to her mouth. A child reached out and touched a petal that had not been there an hour before. "You did this?" the woman asked. Pixie Petal nodded. She grew a single white bloom in her palm while they watched. This time, they gasped. This time, they believed. By dusk, the greenhouse had a name people were saying to each other. They told friends to come at dawn. Pixie Petal finally had her gathering spot, her stage, her witnesses. But word travels fast in a small world. And not everyone who hears about magic wants to see it bloom. Some want to own it.
