Chapter 1

Priya spreads the topographic map across the cabin floor, her finger tracing the vertical lines of Whitehaven's north face. The route calls to her like every death-defying stunt she used to choreograph, except this time she won't be standing behind a camera. She runs through the gear list in her head. Ice axes, check. Crampons, check. But the rock wall outside demands something specific for its frozen vertical stretch. She finds the standard rope in the supply cache, tests its weight, feels the stiff fibers crack under pressure. Wrong. The route she wants requires ice-resistant braided rope with frosted metal carabiners, the kind that won't snap when temperatures drop below zero. Without it, she's stuck on beginner walls. The realization sits in her chest like a failed stunt, watching the best scene get cut from the film.

Chapter 2

Priya climbs the worn steps of the weather tower, ice crunching under her boots. The digital display inside flickers with red warnings. A storm front moves across the screen like a wall of static, closing in fast from the northwest. She pulls out her binoculars and scans the north face from the tower window. The jagged cliff rises like broken teeth against the gray sky, ice formations hanging from every ledge. Some of those ledges look ready to snap off in a strong wind. She watches one chunk of ice break free and tumble down, taking a sheet of snow with it. The storm will hit in three hours, maybe four. After that, she'll be stuck here for weeks waiting for the next weather window. She heads back to her cabin and packs her gear anyway, stuffing the inadequate rope into her bag alongside the ice axes. When she reaches the base of the cliff two hours later, wind already whipping at her face, she knows the rope won't hold on the frozen vertical. She clips in anyway, tests the first hold, and starts to climb. Fifteen meters up, the rope stiffens in her hands like frozen wire. A gust slams her against the rock. She looks up at the crumbling ice ledges above, then down at the ground that suddenly seems very far away. The smart move is obvious. She downclimbs, each hold careful and deliberate, until her boots touch solid ground again. The storm breaks overhead as she walks back, and she tastes something unfamiliar and bitter—the feeling of choosing to stop.

Chapter 3

The storm clears on the third day. Priya climbs back to the weather tower to check the damage reports, expecting to find the usual aftermath—broken trees, buried equipment, maybe a collapsed cabin or two. The wind still bites, but the sky is that hard blue that comes after violence. She stops halfway up the tower steps. The north face looks different. A massive section of the cliff has sheared away, exposing a vertical channel of blue ice she's never seen before—a chimney that cuts straight through the upper face like a jagged scar. Her pulse kicks up. The route is completely exposed now, no hidden overhangs blocking the way to the summit. She pulls out her binoculars and traces the line. Fresh icicles hang from the walls like daggers, and chunks of loose rock still cling to the edges where the storm tore everything apart. It's climbable. It's also a death trap. She watches a sheet of ice the size of a door peel away and crash down the face. The whole chimney could collapse with the next temperature shift. She should wait, let it settle, give the ice time to stabilize. But someone else might spot it first. She heads back to her cabin and checks her gear. The specialized rope she ordered still hasn't arrived. She has the same inadequate equipment that made her turn back last time. Her hands shake as she coils the stiff rope. This is the route she's been hunting for—unstable, unclimbed, exactly the kind of thing that should kill her. She clips the rope to her pack and walks toward the base of the chimney before she can talk herself out of it.
