Quackadoodle signed the transfer papers before she read them. The predator arrived at dawn in a steel cage on a flatbed truck, and she had seven days to prove it could be rehabilitated or the committee would pull her license entirely. She spent the first morning watching through the fence. The mountain lion paced the length of the transport cage, shoulders rolling with each step. Its eyes tracked her when she moved, but it never stopped moving itself. She had the crew unload the cage into the enclosed leash structure behind the main building, where thick bars gave her control of distance and the built-in restraint system let her work without entering the space. The lion tested every corner within an hour. It found the weak hinge on the water tray and bent it. Found the gap where the leash mount connected and worked its paw into the space until Quackadoodle had to pull the emergency release from outside. She made notes in her field book and stayed three feet farther back than she wanted to. On day two, the lion stopped pacing when she sat down on the concrete outside the bars. She sat for four hours that afternoon. The lion watched her from the far corner, then the near corner, then from directly across the bars. It didn't pace. It didn't test the cage. When she stood to leave, it lunged at the bars hard enough to rattle the frame. She walked away without looking back, but her hands shook when she locked the outer gate. On day three, she brought her lunch and ate it on the concrete. The lion watched her the entire time. On day four, it was lying down when she arrived. By day six, the lion met her at the bars every morning. It didn't lunge. It didn't test the restraints. When she moved, it moved with her, tracking her path along the outside of the cage. She opened the water tray slot and the lion stepped back. She closed it and the lion returned. That afternoon, she called the committee and told them to schedule the final evaluation. She had proven the lion could learn. Whether that was enough to save her license would depend on whether the committee believed learning meant workable.
