Chapter 1

Queen Bramble stood at the center of the town square, holding her enchanted lollipop at her side, while Ella Reed's voice carried across the crowd. The question hung in the air like frost: did the lollipop serve the realm, or only the queen herself? Bramble felt the weight of eyes on her crown, not her face. She wanted to tell them about Biscuit, about the mornings spent learning to listen, about how caring for gingerbread subjects had taught her to notice the small kindnesses people needed. But those were private things, confessed only to a bench. Instead, she lifted the lollipop and transformed the cobblestones beneath Ella's feet into gingerbread, smooth and warm. The crowd gasped, then waited. Bramble knelt and pressed her palm to the sweet stone, feeling its pulse. She looked up at Ella, not with anger, but with the same attention she gave to everyone she tried to understand. The question wasn't whether she could prove the lollipop's worth. The question was whether anyone would see her trying. Ella raised a mirror wreathed in red licorice flames above her head. A yellow sticky note clung to its frame: queens deserve glory. The crowd gathered near the wooden aviary at the square's edge pressed closer. Bramble recognized the mirror from her private chambers. Someone had been inside. Someone had taken something meant only for her eyes. Ella's voice cut sharp through the winter air. This is what your queen values. Glory for herself. Not warmth for our homes or bread for our tables. Bramble's chest tightened. The mirror had been a gift on her coronation day, placed beside the lollipop. She had never asked for either. Bramble stood and brushed gingerbread crumbs from her palms. The transformed cobblestones were already cracking in the cold. She had made them too quickly, without the care she usually gave. She thought of Biscuit in the east garden, patient and listening. She thought of the head gardener's second teacup, offered without words. Small kindnesses that no one saw because they happened in quiet places. She met Ella's eyes across the square. I use the lollipop to learn how to care, she said. Her voice was softer than Ella's but it carried. Not for glory. For understanding. The crowd shifted. Some faces looked doubtful. Others looked curious. One woman near the aviary tilted her head, as if hearing something new. Ella lowered the mirror but did not put it down. Then prove it, she said. Show us one thing you've made that serves someone other than yourself. The words were a trap but also a door. Bramble could feel it. She turned toward the ethereal white castle that rose on its cloud above the square, where the town council met each week. She pointed her lollipop at the castle steps and transformed them into warm gingerbread that would not crack or crumble. Let anyone who needs rest or warmth sit here, she said. Not just council members. Anyone. The steps glowed faintly in the winter light. The crowd was silent. Then someone walked forward and sat down. A child followed. Then an old man with tired eyes. Ella watched but did not speak. Bramble had not won. But she had been seen trying. And that, she realized, was a beginning.
