Chapter 1

Rain Brooks had copied the fire-ward spell nine times, and nine mornings it had died. She bent over her desk now, ink staining her arms to the elbow, one eyebrow burned clean away from the last failure. Her whole plan for the lunar cycle rested on one spell holding its shape. But she had never watched a copy survive even a single night. She had no idea what a healthy spell should look like. The scroll before her glowed. The borrowed lines twisted while she wasn't watching, rewriting themselves into shapes she never drew. By dawn they would be ash. She pressed her palms to her eyes. How could she protect something stable when she had never seen stable? A knock rattled her door. The village hex-breaker stepped in without waiting, red hair streaked with gray, a purple gem swinging at her throat. Her boots tracked mud across Rain's floor. Rain had sent for her days ago and nearly given up. "You've been feeding bad copies," the hex-breaker said. She didn't look at Rain. She looked at the scroll. "I've broken a thousand spells. I know a sick one by its breath." "Its breath," Rain repeated. The woman leaned close to the glowing lines. "A living spell holds still. Yours is squirming. See how the ink pulls toward the edges? That's a copy trying to crawl back to its source." She tapped one letter. It flinched. "You're copying the shape. You're not copying the anchor." Rain's stomach dropped. "What anchor?" "Every true spell is pinned to something that doesn't move." The hex-breaker pulled a worn spellbook from her coat, its cover crusted with old symbols. She flipped it open and set it beside Rain's scroll. "Look. The real one has a mark at the center. A knot. You've been leaving it out every time." Rain stared. The book's spell held a small, tight loop at its heart, dark and steady. Her copy had none. She had traced around that knot nine times without seeing it, because it never glowed. It just sat there, plain and quiet, while everything around it shimmered. "That's why they rewrite," Rain whispered. "They have nothing to hold onto." "Now you know what alive looks like." The hex-breaker shut her book. "Copy the knot first. Then the rest." Rain dipped her pen. She drew the dark loop at the center, slow and exact, then built the spell outward from it. When she finished, the lines stopped squirming. The ink lay flat and still, breathing in no direction at all. For the first time, a copy looked like the book. The hex-breaker was already at the door. "That one might last the night," she said. "But the knot drinks power while it holds. By morning, you'll need to feed it. Figure out what, or it starves by noon." She left. Rain looked at her first stable spell, and at the empty hours before dawn.
