Raven Starkiss had six phone numbers, one broken dream, and no stage. Five years ago her crew ruled a tiny punk club. Now they were scattered across the city, and she wanted them back for one reunion show. But a reunion needed a place to happen. So Raven stood outside the only club she trusted, her calico cat's photo taped inside her jacket for luck, staring at a door she didn't know still opened. The sign above still read the club's name, half its letters buried under fresh graffiti. Boards crossed two windows. New flyers layered over old ones, and none of the old ones were hers. Her stomach dropped. She grabbed the door handle and pulled. It opened. Music slammed out. Inside, the stage stood exactly where she'd left it, scarred and low and real. The venue lived. Raven laughed out loud, then covered her mouth. This was it. This was where she could bring everyone home. She pushed through the crowd toward the stage, already planning. Then a wall of neon pink hair blocked her path. Kandi Katastrophe stood at the bar, alone, stirring a flat soda she wasn't drinking. She'd been the loudest of the old crew, the one who screamed loudest at every show. Her rainbow hoodie and crystal tiara glittered under the lights. But she stared at the counter like nobody was watching. Raven knew that look. Kandi wore her happiness like armor, and right now the armor had slipped. "Kandi?" Kandi's head snapped up. For one second her face was raw and tired. Then the grin flipped on, bright and automatic. "Raven! Oh my gosh!" She threw her arms out. The beaded necklaces rattled. "You look amazing, what are you even doing here?" "I could ask you the same thing." Raven hugged her hard. Kandi felt thinner than she remembered. "I'm getting everyone back. The whole crew. One reunion show, right here." She pointed at the stage. "The place is still standing. Can you believe it?" Kandi's grin froze. "Everyone." She looked at the soda. "Raven, nobody talks anymore. You know that, right?" "That's why we do this." "Some of them don't want to be found." Kandi's voice dropped. "I've tried. I text people. They don't text back." She forced the smile again, too wide. "But it's a cute idea! Really." Raven heard what Kandi wasn't saying. The venue was the easy part. She'd been scared of an empty building. The real problem sat right in front of her, stirring a drink, pretending she was fine. "Then start with you," Raven said. "You in?" Kandi's eyes filled. She blinked fast. "Yeah," she whispered. "Yeah, okay." Raven had her stage. She had her first bandmate. But she'd just learned the crew hadn't only scattered. Some of them were hiding, and one of them had been hiding right beside her the whole time.
