Chapter 1

Renee needed one sale to lead the county by year's end, and he had six homes ready to show. He stood in his real estate office and watched the fourth buyer of the day drive away. His phone buzzed again. Another cancellation. "Heard your water's poison," the caller said, and hung up. Renee set the phone down. He had polished every listing. He could not sell a house nobody would drink from. He pulled up the rumor online. A post claimed the whole town's tap water was contaminated. Buyers shared it faster than he could answer. Every listing sat in the affected neighborhood. If the story spread one more day, his year was finished. Renee grabbed his keys. He needed the truth, and only one person could give it. He drove to the clinic and found Dollie the Doctor at the front desk. She had tested the town's water herself. She wore a white coat over blue scrubs, and her curly hair was pinned back. She did not look up. "I can't discuss the water," she said before he spoke. "The council ordered me quiet until Friday." "People think every house is poisoned," Renee said. "That's not what you found, is it?" Dollie's pen stopped. She glanced at the door, then lowered her voice. "Four houses. Old pipes from before the '72 water main. Not the whole town." She pressed her lips shut. "I can't say more. I already broke the order telling you that." Renee felt his chest loosen. Four houses. None of them his listings. He could kill the rumor with one fact. "Then let me say it," he said. "You stay silent. I tell buyers the truth. Four addresses, not the neighborhood." Dollie studied him. "You'd be right," she said slowly. "But those four families still drink that water every morning. The council won't warn them until Friday." Renee stood still. He had come for a rumor. He had found something worse. He drove back to the office and posted the truth. Only four homes affected, all on old pipes, none for sale. He listed the safe streets by name. Within an hour, two buyers rebooked. By evening, a third made an offer on his best listing. The rumor broke. His arc goal was alive again. That night his phone rang. A woman's voice shook. "I saw your post," she said. "You said four houses on the old lines. My house is on the old lines. Nobody told me." She started to cry. "My kids have been drinking it for years." Renee gripped the phone. His post had saved his sales. It had also told four families they were poisoned, days before the council planned to. Now they knew, and they wanted answers he could not give. The rumor was dead. Something harder had taken its place.
