Chapter 1

River Harmony had ninety days to earn the sunset set at the coast's biggest festival, and last night he'd played his best song to a fist pounding on the wall. He sat on a stranger's floor now, guitar across his knees. His blond hair fell over the strings. His whole plan was simple. Write the song that got him that stage. But he had no stage of his own. Not even a room where he could plug in past nine. This was the fourth couch in three weeks. Friends let him crash, then friends got tired. Every night ended the same way. He'd find the melody, lean into it, and someone above or below would bang and shout. Cops came twice. His amp still had a dent from the last fast pack-up. He counted his cash on the floor. Forty dollars. No lease would take that. He needed a place with thick walls and nobody to bother. He thought about it all day. That afternoon a busker told him about a house nobody rented. A mushroom-shaped mansion, painted every color, sitting empty on the edge of town. The owner had left a note on the door for months. River hiked out to see it. The place looked like a dream someone forgot to wake from. Round windows. Swirls of orange and pink. A balcony that curled like a stem. The front door stood unlocked. Inside, dust covered a huge record cabinet stacked with vinyl. An L-shaped couch sat in the middle, its cushions printed with peace signs. Someone had loved this house once. River set his amp down and plugged in. He played one chord. It rang and rang. No wall shook. No fist came. He played the whole song, loud, and the only sound after was his own breathing. He found the note taped inside a kitchen drawer. "Caretaker wanted. Feed the animals. Keep it clean. Stay as long as you play music in it." His hands went cold with luck. Then something moved by his boot. A sleek ferret with a strange shimmering tail sat watching him. Its eyes were sharp and patient, like it had waited a long time. It did not run. It looked at him as if it already knew the deal. River crouched down. "Guess I'm the caretaker," he said. He had a stage now, or close to one. Four walls and no neighbors. But as he stood, he noticed the water damage on the ceiling, the cracked stem of a balcony, a stack of unpaid notices spilling from the drawer. The house was his to keep only if he kept it standing. And in the yard below, half-sunk in an overgrown pond, a row of bright pink dolphin statues stared back at him, their painted peace signs peeling. Someone had built a whole strange life here and left it mid-song. Now the song was his to finish.

Chapter 2

River had a house and a stage, but he couldn't play a single note. The ferret with the shimmering tail wouldn't allow it. Every time he set down a pick, the creature snatched it and bolted. It stole his cords too, dragging them under the couch. Three days of this, and River hadn't practiced once. He counted his losses on the floor. Four picks gone. One cord chewed. The festival waited, and the clock kept moving. He tried chasing the ferret. It slipped through his hands like water. He tried bribing it with bread. The animal sniffed, then stole another pick out of spite. River sat back against the couch and dropped his head. "You're worse than my uncle," he said. A light came through the round window. Pink and purple, soft as a candle. A small fairy floated in, no taller than his hand. Her wings glowed and left faint color in the air. River had seen strange things in this house, but not this. She landed on the record cabinet and studied the mess. "You're doing it wrong," she said. Her voice was small and sure. "Chasing makes fear. Fear makes theft." "Who are you?" "Dazzle." She pointed at the ferret, now crouched under the couch with a pick in its mouth. "That one guards this place. It won't trust a stranger who grabs." She fluttered closer to the animal. Her wings pulsed brighter. The pink light spread over the ferret's fur. River watched its body loosen. Its ears dropped. The sharp look in its eyes went soft. "I calm angry things," Dazzle said. "But calm isn't trust. That part is yours." River understood. He picked up his guitar. He didn't reach for the ferret. He didn't chase. He played the three chords his uncle taught him, slow and steady, the same ones he'd played the night his uncle died. The notes filled the round room. No wall shook. No fist came. The ferret crept out from under the couch. It set the pick down on the floor. Then it climbed onto the arm of the couch and sat, tail shimmering, listening. River kept playing. He nodded at the pick. "That mine?" The ferret didn't take it back. When the song ended, the ferret hopped down and pushed the pick toward his boot with its nose. River laughed. He scratched behind its ears, and it let him. Dazzle's light faded to a normal glow. "He'll play for you now," Dazzle said, quiet and proud. "But playing isn't the same as being ready." She looked at the water-stained ceiling, the cracked balcony stem, the stack of unpaid notices in the drawer. "The house has rules. You keep it standing, or you lose the room. That's next." River stopped smiling. He held his pick and finally had his stage. But the ceiling sagged above him, and the notices waited in the drawer. The ferret would let him play. The house wouldn't, not yet.
