Chapter 1

Samantha Carrillo had been trapped inside Terra Venture for six days, and she still did not know which direction led out of the starter plaza. She stood near the warning post at the plaza's edge, reading the carved words again. Wilderness beyond. Go back if not prepared. Around her, other players sat on benches with their hoods up, saying nothing, the way she had watched too many of them go since the login screen locked. Ten thousand people stuck in one game, and most of them had already stopped talking. Samantha pulled her ponytail tight and decided, again, that she would not be one of them. She wanted to live through this, and if she was honest, she wanted to find someone worth living through it with. The problem was simpler and meaner than that. Daylight was burning, the safe zone gave no map past its own gate, and she had no idea where the next town was. Wandering into the trees blind would waste the hours she had. She looked at the watchtower that marked the plaza border, four stories of wood and stone with a shop and an inn crammed into its base. A board beside the door bristled with pinned notices. She had read every one yesterday. None of them named a road. So she turned back toward the building she had been avoiding. The quest hall took up most of the plaza's far side, tall and loud, its front doors thrown open. Inside, players crowded the long walls of posting boards, arguing over leads. Samantha picked the smallest knot of people and waited her turn. A girl with a small blue fox curled on her shoulder was tracing a hand-drawn map pinned at chest height. The map showed a road east, a river crossing, and a village marked Hollowmere. Two days on foot if you didn't stop. The girl noticed Samantha staring and smiled without moving the fox. "First time out?" she asked. Samantha nodded. "Copy it," the girl said. "Everyone does. The mods leave it up." Samantha pulled up her interface and traced the route into her notes, hand shaking once near the river mark. When she finished, she had a direction, a destination, and roughly forty-eight hours of walking between herself and any roof that wasn't this one. She thanked the girl and stepped back out into the plaza. The warning post was still there at the edge, telling her to go back if she wasn't ready. She wasn't ready. She started walking toward it anyway, because the sun was already past noon and Hollowmere would not move closer on its own.

Chapter 2

Samantha was ten steps past the warning post when her HUD chimed. A small icon blinked in the corner of her vision, gold and insistent. She stopped on the dirt path and opened it. A tutorial quest she had skipped on her first day sat there, still flagged available, with a marker pulsing back toward the plaza. The quest title mentioned a training yard. Below it, a warning line in red told her the reward had already been delivered to her inventory, unclaimed. She pulled up her inventory and saw a wooden box she did not remember. The system tag named it after a captain. She had not opened it because she had not known it was there. She stood on the path and did the math. Two days to Hollowmere. The sun was already sliding. If she turned back to finish the tutorial, she lost the afternoon. If she walked on without whatever was in the box, she walked into the wilderness underleveled. She thought about the silent players on the benches and the girl with the blue fox who had been kind for no reason. Then she turned around. The training yard sat at the far edge of the plaza, behind a wooden sign with a painted arrow she had walked past three times without reading. Inside the fence, straw dummies stood in rows. A quest marker hovered over a rack of practice swords. She followed the prompts the way she should have on day one. Swing here. Block here. Hit the dummy ten times without missing. Her arms learned the motions faster than she expected. A bar in her HUD filled. When the last dummy fell, the quest closed with a soft tone and her level ticked up twice. She opened the box in her inventory and equipped what was inside. A leather breastplate settled over her shirt. A plain sword weighed down her hip. Her stat panel rewrote itself in green. She stepped back through the plaza gate as the sun touched the tops of the trees. She had lost three hours. She would not reach Hollowmere before dark now, and she would have to sleep somewhere on the road. But the sword on her hip was real weight, and the breastplate did not let her forget it was there. She tightened her ponytail and started walking east again, slower this time, watching the tree line.

Chapter 3

Samantha walked the road through the night and into a gray morning. The trees thinned at a bend, and she stopped before she stepped into it. A handcart lay tipped on its side across the path, one wheel cracked into spokes. Bolts of red and yellow cloth spilled into the dirt. Linen bundles had rolled into the weeds. No one stood near it. No voice called for help. She put her hand on her sword and listened to the wind in the leaves. She edged closer and crouched by the wreck. A pair of leather gloves lay folded under a bolt of cloth, dry and her size. She pulled them on and flexed her fingers. Near the front of the cart, a leather pouch had tipped over. Coins had spilled across a small pile of dried herbs. She scraped the coins into her palm and dropped them into her inventory. The pouch itself smelled like rosemary and sweat. Someone had carried it against their skin for a long time. She stood and walked a slow circle around the cart. In a soft patch of mud past the shoulder, she found what she was looking for. Three sets of boot prints, none deep, none matched. One print had stepped on another, which meant they had crowded each other. A single set of hoof prints trailed off into the brush, light and uneven, like a pack animal led away by someone who did not know how to lead. No blood on the dirt. No drag marks toward the road. Bandits, she decided. New ones. They had spooked the merchant off the cart, taken the animal, and run before they thought to take the coins. She stepped back to the road and weighed it. Walk on and reach Hollowmere by dusk. Turn back a day to fetch help that might not come. Or follow the hoof prints into the brush after a man she had never met. She thought about the silent players on the benches in the plaza, the ones who had stopped caring what happened to anyone else. She tightened the gloves on her hands and checked her sword in its sheath. Then she stepped off the road and into the trees, following the hoof prints east of the path, where the merchant had been taken.

Chapter 4

Samantha pushed through the brush for half an hour before the cry reached her. It came thin and high through the trees, then broke off. She froze with one hand on her sword. The light under the canopy had gone the color of old tea. She had maybe an hour before she could not see her own boots. The cry came again from her left, past a stand of pines. She could not tell if it was a grown man or a scared kid. She crouched and listened for a second sound to place it. She found a lantern first. It sat on its side in the leaves, glass cracked but the candle inside still warm. Someone had dropped it running. A few steps past it, the ground showed two sets of prints. One set wore boots and dragged. The other wore boots and ran. The dragged set went one way. The runner went the other. The cry came again from the dragging trail. She picked up the lantern, shielded the flame, and followed the drag marks deeper in. The trees opened on a wide pit sunk into the forest floor. Stone walls dropped straight down, slick with moss and wet earth. At the bottom, a man in a stained tunic sat with his back against the rock, holding one ankle. He saw her light and lifted both hands. "Please," he said. "They left me. I think it's broken." Past the pit, on the far side of a small clearing, Samantha saw a ring of blackened stones around a dead fire. A length of rope hung from a branch beside it. The pack animal was gone. So were the bandits. They had panicked, dumped the merchant down the pit, and run when they heard her in the brush. She set the lantern at the edge so its light reached him. "I'm coming down," she called. "Stay still." She worked along the wall until she found a slope of broken rock she could pick her way down. At the bottom she crouched beside him and looked at the ankle. Swollen, not bent wrong. He could walk if she carried half his weight. He told her his name was Petar and that he had been heading to Hollowmere with cloth. She told him she was going there too. She got her shoulder under his arm and lifted. He was heavier than she expected, and the climb out of the pit would take what was left of the light. She did not know how she would move him through the woods in the dark. But she had found him alive, and she was not going to leave him.
