Scrunchie Monster wanted one simple thing: to walk down the road without laughter chasing him. His body was scrunched tight, folded like a squeezed rag, and his legs moved in short, wobbling hops. Every step made him tilt sideways. Today he had to reach the market before it closed, and the market road passed right by the loudest building in town. He pressed his back against his wrinkled little cottage and watched the road. The tavern doors hung open. Rough voices spilled out with the music. He knew that crowd. Last week they had lined the porch and copied his walk, rocking side to side, howling until his face burned. He had run home and stayed inside two full days. So he made a plan. He would go the long way, past the tavern but on the far edge, quick and quiet. He tucked his arms in and started his hop-tilt shuffle. He got twenty steps before a barrel-chested regular spotted him from the tavern porch. "Look! Here comes the crooked one!" the man shouted. Others crowded the doorway. They began to sway and stagger, mocking him, spilling their drinks with laughter. Scrunchie Monster froze. Running would only make the wobble worse. He looked down at his tilting feet and felt the old shame rise. Then he saw something leaning against his cottage wall, left there long ago. A tall wooden cane, dark and polished, carved with curling gold vines along its length. He grabbed it. He set the tip on the ground and leaned his weight into it. When he stepped, the cane took his tilt and turned it into a slow, grand lean. His wobble became a stride. His scrunched hop became a careful, deliberate step, like a gentleman crossing a ballroom. The laughter stumbled. The swaying men stopped swaying. Scrunchie Monster lifted his chin and walked straight past the open doors. Tap. Step. Tap. Step. Each strike of the cane rang against the wood. He did not hurry. He did not tilt in fear. He looked every mocker in the eye. "That's a fine cane," one of them muttered, and the crowd went quiet. He reached the end of the road and did not look back. His walk had not changed. But now it had a reason, and no one had a joke for a man who moved on purpose. That night he set the cane by his door where he could reach it. For the first time, he had not run home to hide. He had walked home tall. But leaning on the cane all day had left a deep ache in his arm and shoulder. By morning his fingers were stiff and swollen. When he tried to lift the cane again, his hand would not close around the handle. The thing that had saved his walk now sat by the door, and he could not hold it.
