Chapter 1

Shy Rose stood at the edge of the empty lot, brushing dust from her sleeves. A weathered sign leaned in the grass, its bold letters promising the plot to anyone who could pay. She had counted coins for months. This patch of dirt would be her tavern, the place where loose tongues would feed her something better than gold. Then the crowd shifted, and every head turned toward the square. Celeste Windwhisper had walked into town. People pressed close beneath a tall iron lantern wrapped in juniper vines, its glow catching on her hair. Whispers spilled out fast, hungry, careless. Shy Rose slipped to the back of the crowd. She pulled a small lined notepad from her pocket and let the pen move. A merchant muttered about a debt. A baker named a lover. A widow named a price. The secrets fell into her pages like rain into a bucket she had not yet built. She looked down at her empty lot, then at the full notepad in her hand. The order had reversed. The drinkers had come before the tavern. Shy Rose tucked the pages away and walked toward the landlord's door, no longer planning a tavern someday. She was building it tonight.

Chapter 2

Shy Rose crossed the lot on her way to the landlord's door. The ground was rough, all dirt and loose stone, with brown grass clinging between the rocks. A tall boulder leaned at the center like a crooked tooth. Tucked against its base sat a small tin, polished bright, gleaming where it had no right to gleam. The landlord opened before she knocked. He held a yellowed deed rolled in his fist, the calligraphy curling along its edge. He did not ask for coin. He asked what she wrote in her notepad when Celeste came to town. He said he had watched her from his window. He said the tin on the rock was his, left there each morning, and only a careful woman would have noticed it. He wanted her secret. One for one. Shy Rose felt her throat close. Her own method, turned around and pointed at her chest. She thought of the page she kept hidden behind the others, the one about herself. She could lie. She could walk away. She gave him a smaller truth instead — the name of a man whose debt she had overheard, a secret not her own. He listened, weighed it, and shook his head. He pressed the deed back into its roll and shut the door. She stood on the rough ground with empty hands. The lot was no longer for sale to her. But she understood something now, sharp as a splinter. Someone in this town had been watching her watch. Tonight she would not sleep, and tomorrow she would need a new plan.
