Three expedition members never came back from last week's walk, and now the others wouldn't follow Silas Mothridge into the dark. He stood on the cabin porch and watched them refuse. Six people, headlamps off, backpacks still zipped. One of them, a woman holding a black pack with a little moth keychain, set it on the steps and would not pick it up again. "We're not going out there at night," she said. "Not after Pete. Not after the others." Silas had built this whole life around the search. The black cabin behind him wore its painted moths and red doorframe like a promise. His maps covered the walls inside, marked with every sighting that always went cold. He wanted one clear photo. He had wanted it for years. But a camera needs hands beside you in the woods. "The sightings peak at night," he said. "That's when it moves. We go now or we lose the pattern." "Then go alone," she said. The others nodded. They turned and walked toward their trucks. Headlights swung across the trees and left. Silas stayed on the steps a long time. Wind moved the leaves. He listened to the forest the way he always did, learning its rhythm. Tonight the rhythm was wrong. No crickets. No owl. Just a slow dripping sound from somewhere past the treeline. He went inside, grabbed his camera, and picked up the moth-keychain pack she'd left. He could keep hosting weekly expeditions and watch them shrink to nothing. Or he could learn what scared his people off. He chose to walk. The trail was soft and dark red under his boots. He reached the old sign where someone had sprayed a black moth across a rusted stop sign. The dripping grew louder. He followed it. It led him to a tree he had never mapped. Its leaves hung heavy and red, and from every branch the red ran down in long threads and pooled at the roots. He touched a drop. Warm. Sticky. Not sap. Blood. Silas stepped back. His boots sank into wet ground. The whole clearing bled up from under the soil. This was what his people had felt and he had not. Not Mothman. Something in the earth itself. Then the dripping stopped. Every sound stopped. Behind the weeping tree, two red points opened in the dark and held on him, low to the ground, steady, watching. He raised the camera. His hands shook. He got one frame before the eyes slid back and vanished. Silas ran. He did not stop until the cabin porch was under his feet. Inside, he laid the camera on his maps. The photo showed the bleeding tree, and beside it, two red eyes. Not the face he wanted. But proof of something. He pinned the photo to the wall. His expeditions were finished. Whatever he did next, he would do it alone.

Chapter 2

Silas Mothridge went back the next night. One frame of red eyes was not enough. He wanted the thing itself, whole and clear. He packed the camera, checked the battery, and followed the trail to the clearing he had never mapped. The bleeding tree stood where he left it. Red ran down its heavy leaves and pooled black at the roots. He raised the camera and started shooting. Then the eyes opened past the tree. Low to the ground, two red points, steady. This time they did not slide away. The shape stepped out. A wolf, black as the soil, its fur catching no light. It fixed on him and came forward, slow and sure. Silas kept shooting. The shutter clicked. The wolf closed the gap. Ten feet. Eight. He told himself one more frame, then one more. His legs would not move. The red eyes held him the way they had held him last night. He could not keep pressing the button and live. He knew it and still his finger worked. The wolf lowered its head. Its shoulders bunched. Silas dropped the camera on its strap and ran. He did not watch the ground. His boot hit a slick patch and the world turned sideways. He went down hard into wet mud streaked deep red, cold and sour on his hands. He rolled. The wolf was almost on him. Behind it, past the weeping tree, a tangle of black vines pulsed with a red glow, ember bright in the dark. The light from the vines caught the wolf's coat and threw its shadow long across the mud. Silas grabbed the only thing near him. His hand closed on a fallen branch thick with dripping leaves. He swung it as the wolf lunged. The wet branch cracked across its muzzle. The wolf twisted away, snarling, and backed off two steps. It did not run. It stood between him and the tree, eyes burning, deciding. Silas got to his feet in the bloody mud. He kept the branch up. He stepped backward, one slow step at a time, toward the trail. The wolf watched him go. It did not follow past the edge of the glowing vines, as if that ring of red light marked a line it would not cross. Silas ran the whole way back. The cabin porch caught him. Inside, he pulled the camera up with shaking hands and found the last frames. There it was. Not Mothman. The black wolf, full body, red eyes sharp, standing before the bleeding tree. He pinned the photo beside the first one. Two years of maps, and the clearest shot he had ever taken was of something that wanted him dead. The wolf had let him leave. It had guarded that tree and those vines like they were its own. Whatever bled up from that ground, the wolf belonged to it. And now it had his scent.

Chapter 3

Silas pinned the wolf photo beside the first and sat down to plan his next trip. He needed the morning light, the right lens, a safe route back to the clearing. But his maps blurred under his tired eyes. He pushed them aside and listened to the forest, the way he always did. Something was wrong with its rhythm tonight. A howl rolled through the dark. Close. Then breathing, low and heavy, moving along the cabin wall. Silas froze over his maps. Claws scraped the wood below the window. The thing was circling his home. It had found him. It had his scent. He crept to the dark double window and pulled the hanging black cloth aside. Beyond the glass, red leaves hung still in the night. Two red eyes glowed at the tree line. The black wolf stood and watched the cabin, patient, waiting for him to come out. Silas let the cloth drop and backed away. He could not run for the car. He could not sleep. The wolf had him trapped inside his own walls. He remembered the glowing vines in the clearing, the line the wolf would not cross. His cabin had no such line. All he could do was wait, stay calm, stay still, the way he had learned the forest demanded. Silas sank down onto the floor beside the patched leather sofa. The red moth pillow stared at him. He grabbed a cup of ramen off the table and peeled the lid. Noodles spilled over the rim in a wet tangle. He ate it cold, one bite at a time, while the wolf growled and scratched outside. To keep his hands busy, he opened his sketch journal. He drew Mothman by lamplight, wings spread, eyes wide, the way the old stories described. He read his notes. He flipped through his stack of worn comics. Between pages, the scratching came again, then stopped, then came back. He did not look at the window. He did not get up. He just kept drawing and waited the night out. Hours passed this way. The growls grew further apart. Near dawn they stopped. Silas sat still another long while, afraid to trust the quiet. When gray light finally touched the red window, he stood on stiff legs and looked out. The tree line was empty. The red eyes were gone. He opened the door and found claw marks gouged deep in the porch wood. He had survived the night. But Silas understood now that the wolf would come back every night he stayed. The clearing and the cabin were one territory, and the wolf claimed both. He could not hide from it and photograph Mothman at the same time. If he wanted his picture, he had to stop running. He had to deal with the wolf for good. He grabbed his maps and began marking the one place the wolf would not follow.
