Chapter 1

Sir Uthred stood at the gates of his family's ancestral hall and knew the guards would laugh at him. He wore his father's iron helmet, its faceplate cast in the old style, and on his hand rode the family signet ring. The ring bore a mace, the mark his bloodline stamped on this hall for six generations. Then his family was cast out. Now Uthred wanted his seat at the high table back. But a ring proved nothing. Anyone could buy a ring. The steward at the gate barely looked up. "Land deeds or witnesses," he said. "No paper, no claim. Move along, beggar." He shut the small door in Uthred's face. Uthred stood in the road, jaw tight. The steward was right. His grandfather had fled without the deeds. Every soul who remembered that day was scattered or dead. Without a living witness, he was just a stranger in an old helmet. His grey wolfhound pressed against his leg. The dog was older than any hall, silver at the muzzle, calm even now. It had belonged to his father. Uthred rested a hand on its head and thought hard. Then he remembered a name his grandfather spoke on his deathbed. A cook's daughter had run from the hall the same night, carrying the household books. She had gone to the coast. Uthred traveled three days to reach the fishing village. Weathered homes stood on wooden legs above the water. Nets hung to dry. Salt stung his eyes. He asked at the docks for an old woman who once served a great hall. A fisherman pointed him to the last house on the pier. She answered his knock slowly. Her hands shook. She saw the helmet first, then the ring, and her breath caught. "That mace," she whispered. "I scrubbed that mark off a hundred cups." She stared at Uthred's face. "You have his jaw. The lord's jaw." Uthred knelt so the wolfhound stood beside him. "They call me a pretender," he said. "I have no proof. Only this ring and this dog." The old woman went inside. She came back with a wrapped bundle. Inside lay a leather book, its pages swollen with damp but whole. "The household ledger," she said. "Names, rents, every servant's wage in your grandfather's hand. I took it the night they threw you out. I always knew someone would come." Uthred held the book against his chest. His hands were steady now. He had his proof. The old woman gripped his sleeve before he could rise. "Understand this. The man who sits at your high table now paid the men who burned your grandfather out. He will not fear a ring. But a ledger with his crimes inside it, he will kill for." She looked at the door as if the road itself might be listening. "Guard that book, boy. The moment he learns it exists, he will come for you."
