Chapter 1

Stellan Aphelion had guarded the Queen for seven years, and tonight his own hands were the threat. He stood in his tower, far from the palace, gripping his mother's crystal amulet against his chest. The ice inside him would not sleep. It had woken three days ago, when an assassin's blade came for Evangeline. He had stopped the killer, but also froze half the throne room then fled rather than harm anyone else. Frost crept across the stone floor. The amulet glowed and bit cold into his palm. It held the power, but only a little. The crystal cracked at one edge now, thin as a hair. He felt the surge build again, a pressure behind his ribs, and he could not push it down. He knew what he wanted, he just didn’t know if they were achievable. His first priority of course was the queen‘s safety, though he also wanted her hand. A guard dare had no right to ask but, neither mattered if he could not master his ability. A man who almost froze an entire room could not stand close to the one he loved. The doors suddenly swung open. A loud slam echos throughout his chambers. Evangeline stepped inside, her boots crunching on the frost. She had ridden alone, without guards, her hair threaded with blue and dusted with white beads from the light snowfall outside. Stellan backed away. "Stay out," he said. "I can't hold it." "You held a blade off my throat," she answered. She steadily closes the distance. "I'm not afraid of you." "You should be." His breath came out in white clouds. The cold surge began to grow. Ice spread toward her feet. She knelt in it anyway. From her cloak she drew an amulet he had never seen, silver and carved with snowflakes, a pale crystal set in its heart. "My mother left this," she said. "The old court called it The Frostbarrier. I think it was waiting for you." She pressed it into his free hand. The moment his fingers closed, the cold rushed out of him and into the stone. It did not scatter. It poured through both amulets, his mother's and hers, and found a shape. The ice on the floor rose and gathered. It did not freeze the room. It stood, four-legged, tall as a horse, fur made of frost and crystal spines along its back. A wolf. Its eyes were pale blue. It looked at Stellan the way a hound looks at its master, and the surge in his chest went quiet. He breathed. For the first time in three days, his hands were still. "You didn't run from me," he said. "I never will," Evangeline said. After a moment her expression hardened. "But I came to warn you. The assassin who died carried a seal. A noble of my own court sent him we just don’t know who but…he will send more." The wolf's ears turned toward the door. Stellan tightened his grip on both amulets. The power obeyed now. The danger inching closer to home.

Chapter 2

Three days after the tower, Stellan returned to the palace with the dead assassin's seal in his glove. He laid it on Evangeline's desk under candlelight. The wax was deep red, stamped with a crowned beast and twined silver lines. It carried no name. "Every noble sits beneath one crest," he said. "This one hides its owner." The ice wolf lay protectively by the door, its pale eyes tracking the hall. Evangeline lifted the seal and turned it to the flame. Her thumb traced the twisted silver. "These loops aren't decoration," she said. "My mother used marks like this. A private code, carried only by those she trusted most." She set the seal down. "Whoever sent my killer sits close to me…close enough to copy her hand." "Then do as I say and stay in your room" Stellan growled in a low voice. "I cannot guard you against a face I do not know." Evangeline turns to Stellan frustration on her face."I won't hide while a traitor wears my colors." She crossed to a locked cabinet and drew out a small scroll. Its seal matched the assassin's twined silver, but beneath it she had hidden a second, truer mark. "My mother kept records of every private crest she ever granted. I know where she stored them." They set out together through the sleeping silent palace. The wolf padded ahead, cold breath misting through the air. Slowly and quietly they make their way through the winding halls, Evangeline leads him her hand in his looking back over her shoulder locking eyes with him. A small smirk begins to tug at the corners of her lips. “Almost there” she whispers. In light circular motions she she treads her thumb over the back of his hand. Stellan’s breath catches “Evangeline” he says. He glides his fingers down her arm. Before she could react they finally reached the unused chapel. Evangeline takes out a crystal carved snowflake and presses it the wall. A panel slides back and insides lay a shelf of ledgers. Stellan held the seal to the open pages while she read. The twined silver pattern repeated on one line only. Her finger stopped. The color left her face. "The steward of the inner court," she whispered. "My uncle's men. He has served this house since I was a child." She closed the ledger. "He stands outside my door every night." Stellan felt the cold rise behind his ribs. He gripped his mother's amulet and the wolf turned toward him. The surge went quiet. "Then he is already inside your guard," he said. "Tonight he waits at your chamber." They climbed back to her room. The steward stood where he always stood, hands folded, head bowed. Stellan holds up the seal to the stewards face. "You pressed this into a dead man's hand." The steward did not deny it. He smiled, slow and certain. "You found one crest," he said. "You think one crest is the whole plot." His eyes moved to Evangeline. "I was never meant to kill you, Your Majesty. Only to keep them watching the wrong door." He cracked an eerie smile. Guards seized him before he finished. Stellan held his blade to the man's throat but the words had already landed. The traitor had a face now. He also had masters still hidden, and a plan Stellan had not yet seen. Evangeline met Stellan's eyes over the kneeling man. "We’ve caught the hand," she said. "Not the head."

Chapter 3

They dragged the steward to the cold cellar beneath the ivory palace. His name was Osric Thorne, and he had served this house since Evangeline was a child. He had folded her blankets, guarded her door, watched her grow. Now he knelt in chains, his dark robes torn, his gray eyes fixed on the floor. Stellan stood over him and asked the same question for the third hour. Who sent you? Osric only smiled his thin, tired smile. "You waste your breath," Osric whispered. His voice shook, but he did not yield. " I have served masters you cannot reach. Cut me…Freeze me….The answer will still die along with me." He smiles his twisted crooked smile, sarcastically bowing to Stellan. Stellan crouched to meet his eyes. He had tried threats. He had tried the blade. Nothing cracked the man. So he changed his weapon. From his glove he drew the sketch Evangeline had copied from the ledger—a silver snowflake wrapped around a crescent moon, a black diamond at its heart. He held it to the lamplight. "I know this mark," Stellan said. "The Moonclaw Sigil. Tell me who wears it." The change was instant. Osric's smile broke apart. His chained hands began to tremble, the keys at his belt rattling. The color drained from his gray face. "Where did you find that," he breathed. "You should not know that name. None of you should." "Then you do know it." Stellan pressed closer. "You will tell me every mouth that speaks it." Osric's composure crumbled all at once. He wept, shaking. "They will kill me either way," he desperately dragged out. "But hear this, swordsman. The one behind it all sits inside her circle. Someone she trusts. Someone you trust." His eyes rose, wet and desperate. "The Queen's greatest enemy stands closer than—" He never finished. His body jerked. A black line crawled up his throat beneath the skin, spreading like frost over glass. His eyes went wide. He clawed at his chest, choked once, and collapsed sideways against the stone. Steam hissed from his open mouth. Stellan seized him. "Who?! Give me the name!" But the steward's chest had already stilled. A faint mark glowed and faded on his neck—the same claw and moon from the sketch, burned into his flesh. A curse, triggered the moment he began to speak. An assassin's hand reaching from somewhere Stellan could not see. In low eyes, he looks around and over his shoulder. He lowered the dead man slowly to the floor. His breath frosted the air. The cold rose behind his ribs, and he gripped his mother's amulet until it quieted. Footsteps rang on the stairs. Evangeline appeared in the doorway, her blue-threaded hair loose, her face pale. She saw the body and stopped. "He talked," Stellan said. "Just not enough." He stood and faced her. "The traitor sits in your most inner circle. Someone we both trust so much, they can deceive us right under our nose." He huffed, he closed his fist around the sketch of the Moonclaw Sigil. "We hunted a stranger. Now I must hunt a friend."

Chapter 5

Stellan found Evangeline in her study the morning after the frozen rose appeared. He set the melting flower on her desk and told her the truth. The traitor was close to him. The palace was not safe. A ball would gather every enemy under one roof, masked and armed. He asked her to cancel. She did not even look up from the guest list. "No." "My Queen—" "The people are frightened, Stellan." She finally met his eyes. "They whisper that their Queen hides in her tower. A traitor wants me afraid. I will not give him that." She pressed her seal into the wax. "The ball happens." He knew that stubbornness. Arguing would waste the hours he had left. So he changed his plan. If she would not cancel, he would make the ball a trap he controlled. That night the palace glowed with candlelight and enchanted snow. Music rose through the halls of ivory stone. Evangeline arrived in ice-blue and silver, crystals flaring with every step, a crown of frost upon her coils. Stellan stood at her shoulder in black and silver, a cracked-ice mask across his face, blue light flickering at his fingertips. He watched every door. He counted every guest. But he watched her too. They danced once, her hand in his, and the whole room fell away. Later he found her alone on a balcony above the gardens. Snow drifted between them. She lifted her mask. He lifted his. Her breath touched his lips. He leaned close enough to feel the warmth of her. A servant appeared at the door. A folded note, sealed in frost. "For the Guardian," the servant said, then vanished into the crowd. Stellan stepped back, the moment broken. He opened the note. One line, etched in ice. "The truth waits in the eastern tower." He wanted to burn it and stay. But he could not leave the thread unpulled. Evangeline took his arm. "We go together," she said, and he did not argue. They crossed the dark grounds to the oldest tower. Frost wrapped its cracked stone. Moss clung to broken stairs. Cold breathed from its open mouth. Inside, Stellan's light revealed carvings worn smooth by centuries. At the base of the wall, fresh frost formed words across the ancient stone. "When the Winter Queen returns, the Gate shall open." Evangeline touched the letters. Her fingers came away glittering. "The Winter Queen," she whispered. "My ancestor. She died three hundred years ago." Stellan's amulet turned to ice against his chest. The cold behind his ribs stirred, answering something in the stone. This was no court traitor plotting with a knife. The conspiracy reached back into the dead. "She isn't gone," Stellan said. "Someone is bringing her back. And they want you to open the Gate." The ball had not drawn out a killer. It had drawn them here, to a warning older than the throne itself.
