Stellan Aphelion's dream is winning the Queen's hand in marriage without betraying his sworn oath to protect her, while mastering his ice magic to be able to defeat the ancient threat to the throne.
The knife meant for the Queen never reached her throat. Stellan Aphelion caught the assassin's wrist and felt something cold break open inside his chest. He had guarded the Queen for seven years as her finest blade, loyal and silent. He had never told her he loved her. He had never told anyone about the ice. Now the ice answered. Frost raced down his arm and sealed the assassin's hand to the blade. The man screamed. His fingers turned white, then blue, then still. The Queen stood behind Stellan, one hand at her mouth. Guards flooded the chamber. They saw the dead assassin, the sword locked in ice, and the frost spreading across the marble at Stellan's feet. They saw their captain's eyes gone pale as winter glass. "Stellan," the Queen said. Only she dared speak his name. "What is this?" He could not answer. The cold would not stop. It climbed the walls and cracked a window. He pressed his palms against the floor and tried to pull it back, but the power did not obey. It poured out of him like water through a broken dam. If he stayed, he would freeze the whole room, and her with it. So he ran. He ran from the palace he had sworn to protect. He crossed the cold country to the one place that was his, a tall stone tower that rose alone above the pines. Inside, his wolf waited, a great beast with a silver coat and eyes like frozen lakes. The wolf pressed its head to Stellan's chest. Where it touched him, the frost calmed. Stellan climbed to the top room. His hands still trembled. Frost bloomed on everything he touched. He could not go back to her like this. He could not guard a queen he might kill with a touch. In a locked chest under the window, he found what his mother left him before she died. An amulet, oval and pale, carved with snowflakes and set with blue crystal. She had always said it was meant for the day the cold woke inside him. He had thought it a story. He lifted the chain over his head. The crystal grew cold against his skin, then warm. The frost on his hands drew inward, down his arms, into the stone of the amulet. For the first time since the knife, his breath came slow and even. He opened his palm. A single shard of ice formed there, sharp and clean. He willed it to melt, and it melted. He willed it to return, and it came. The power obeyed. The wolf lifted its head toward the window, toward the capital he had fled. Stellan followed its gaze. The assassin had not acted alone. Someone wanted the Queen dead, and that someone still breathed. Stellan closed his fist around the amulet. He would learn to master this gift. Then he would go back, and he would find whoever sent the blade.
Stellan stood on the balcony of his tower and watched a rider climb the frozen road. The man wore palace colors. He carried a sealed letter. Stellan took it with steady hands. The seal was the Queen's. He broke it and read three lines. A second assassin had been caught inside the palace walls last night. The next blade could come tonight. The capital lay two days away by horse. Two days was too long. A knife needed only a moment. Stellan pressed the cold crystal of his mother's amulet against his chest. The frost in his blood went quiet. He looked at the snow heaped along the road, at the ice sheeting the river below. He had spent weeks learning to pull cold from himself. He had never tried to pull it from the world. He went down to the river and set his palm on the ice. He willed it to rise. It cracked and lifted into a long, flat sheet. He willed it to move, and it slid forward over the snow. He stepped onto it. The sheet carried him like a boat with no water. Faster than a horse. Faster than any blade could ride. He traveled through the night. Snow blurred past. The amulet burned cold and held the surge in check. By the second dawn the capital's spires rose ahead. Stellan did not slow at the gates. He froze a ramp up the outer wall and crossed it on foot. He reached her chamber as a servant lifted a wine cup toward the Queen's lips. The servant's free hand held a thin blade low against her skirt. Stellan flung out his fingers. Frost shot across the floor and locked the woman's feet to the stone. The cup fell. The blade clattered down. Guards seized the servant. Evangeline rose from her chair, her blue-streaked curls loose around her face. She stared at the ice spreading from Stellan's boots. Her green eyes caught the silver light of it. "You froze the floor," she said. Her voice did not shake. "In the chamber, that night, it was you." "Yes...it was me" He did not dare look away from her. For seven years he had kept the cold a secret from her. Sealed and locked away, Now it coated the marble between them. She stepped off the dais, around the frost, and stopped close enough to touch his hand. She did not flinch from the chill. Her hardened royal exterior softened as their touch met. "You came back," she said softly. "You could have stayed hidden away…but you came back for me." "I’ll always come back for you." The words left him before he could stop them. The captured servant twisted in the guards' grip and spat one name through her teeth. A name Stellan knew. A noble of the inner court. The hand behind both blades had a face at last. Evangeline heard the name too. Her fingers closed around Stellan's cold ones, and she couldn’t bare to let go.
