Chapter 1

Steve Trevor's bomber lay broken in the surf, and he still owed a report to a man three weeks gone. He crouched by the wreck at low tide. One wing bent under the water. The other pointed at the sky like a snapped bone. Salt had already eaten into the engine. He had flown intelligence that could turn the war, and now he could not fly at all. The front line was somewhere past that horizon, and he had no way to reach it. Diana knelt beside him. She wore red and gold, a lasso of coiled rope at her hip. She had left her island to help him get back. She had faced her own people to do it. Now she pulled a soaked panel loose and looked at the rot beneath. "This will not fly," she said. "I know." Steve wiped grease from his hands. "I keep thinking I can fix it." "You cannot." She said it plainly and let it sit. "But there is another way off this shore." A man rose from the water behind them. He came up without a splash. White hair clung to his shoulders, and blue marks streaked his face. He carried no weapon Steve could see, yet his eyes moved over the beach like he was counting threats. "You are loud," the man said. "Both of you. The whole shelf can feel you." "Aquido," Diana said. She stood. "He guards the queen of Atlantis. I sent for him." Steve got to his feet slowly. "Atlantis." "There is a way down," Aquido said. "A current that runs deep and fast. It reaches the surface world faster than your machine ever could." He looked at the wreck and said nothing kind about it. Steve looked at Diana. "You trust him?" "Yes." No hedge. "He can carry us past the reef. From there the current does the rest." Steve stared at the black water. Three weeks ago he had thought that water meant death. Now it was the only road home. He thought of his commanding officer, waiting on a report that could save lives. "Then we don't waste more tide," he said. Aquido did not move. His head turned, slow, toward the rocks north of the wreck. His whole body went still. "Something is in the water," he said. "Something that does not belong." Diana's hand dropped to the lasso. "Cheetah." "Who?" Steve asked. "She hunts me," Diana said. "She will start with you." Aquido stepped between them and the rocks. "The current is a mile out. We will not reach it before she reaches us." Steve looked back once at his broken bomber. It would never fly. That door was shut for good. The only way to the war now ran through deep water, and something waited between him and it. "Then we run," he said, and they moved for the shore break together.
