Chapter 1

Summer's rover died two hours from the dome, and the only voice she wanted to hear was trapped inside it. She sat in the cockpit and stared at the dead radio. This morning she had promised the main character a sunset picnic. Now she couldn't even tell them she was alive. The heat pressed through the glass. Sweat ran down her back. She pulled at her bikini strap and laughed, because crying felt worse. She popped the engine panel. A melted wire hung loose, black at both ends. She knew rovers. She'd rebuilt three of them to impress him. That was the whole point of learning. But she had no spare wire and no tools worth the name. The dome sat far across the red flats, a cluster of glass bubbles shrinking in the haze. So she did the only thing left. She walked. The suns burned her shoulders raw. Her legs ached by the first mile. She thought about turning back and waiting for rescue. But nobody knew she'd left. Nobody would come. That truth pushed her forward. Halfway there, a second rover roared over the flats and slid to a stop beside her. The driver stood on the seat before the wheels even settled. Brown hair, green eyes, cutoff shorts, tattoos winding down both arms. Autumn. Summer's best friend, and the only person on Begopia who understood exactly why she'd risked the desert alone. "You left for a picnic and forgot to tell your best friend?" Autumn said. She grinned, but her hands shook as she pulled Summer up. "I tracked your rover's last ping. You scared me." "My radio died," Summer said. Her throat was dry sand. "I have to reach him. He's waiting." Autumn wrapped an arm around her and guided her into the seat. "He can wait one more hour. You almost cooked out here." She pressed a water flask into Summer's hands and watched her drink, close, unhurried. "You'd do the same for me. Both of us, really." Summer caught the look. She knew what Autumn wanted, and it wasn't a simple thing. Autumn wanted all three of them together. Summer wanted him for herself. For now she only nodded and drank. The rover carried them to the dome by dusk. The glass panels glowed gold above the gardens. Summer stumbled through the airlock and reached the communications room. She grabbed the main channel and called him. He answered fast. His voice broke with worry. He'd been searching every frequency for hours. He said he'd nearly gone out after her himself. Summer smiled and shut her eyes. He had worried. That meant something. Then Autumn stepped up beside the console, close, her hand settling on Summer's shoulder, and spoke into the same channel. "We're both back safe," she said. "All of us should talk. Tonight." He went quiet. Summer felt the ground shift under her. Getting home had been the easy part. Now there were three voices on one line, and only one heart she wanted.
