Chapter 1

Symphira Starweaver reached for her dragon's mind, and found a locked door. She had done this a hundred times on the high meadow where the beast slept. Her magic was vast. It could call a falcon from the clouds or bend fire to her will. But it needed a name to grab hold of, and her golden dragon had none. For twenty years she had called it only "you." Now she needed more. She wanted a soulbond, so they could speak and feel as one. Without a name, her magic slid off the dragon like water off glass. The dragon lifted its massive head. Its scales caught the light and sparkled like stars. Those scales fell sometimes, one or two a season. Symphira had kept the broken ones in a cedar box. An old teacher once told her a dragon's true name lived inside its heart, and that a shed scale still remembered the beat. She climbed to the meadow at dawn and opened the box. Inside lay a scale shaped like a heart. It had split years ago into jagged pieces. Weathered lines ran across its surface. She had never dared use it, afraid the cracks meant the name was lost. Symphira pressed the broken scale against her ear. She closed her eyes. She heard the wind. She heard her own pulse. Then, faint beneath both, she heard a slow drum. It matched the rise and fall of the sleeping dragon's breath. A sound hid inside that drumbeat, curled and waiting. She strained to catch it. The cracks in the scale made the sound stutter and break apart. One syllable came clear. Then silence. Then another, too soft to hold. The fractured scale could not carry a whole name. She turned the pieces in her palm and understood. The name was not lost. It was trapped behind the breaks. Symphira poured her magic into the scale. She did not force it. She asked. The drumbeat grew louder. The cracked seams glowed faint gold. For one breath the broken edges aligned, and the full name rang through her skull like a struck bell. She gasped and spoke it aloud. The dragon's eyes snapped open. Its whole body went still. Then it turned its head and looked at Symphira as if seeing her for the first time. She felt the locked door swing wide. Her magic reached through and caught hold of something warm and alive. For one heartbeat, their two minds brushed together, and she felt the dragon's joy as her own. Then the Cracked Heart-Scale broke further in her hand. A new line split it clean down the middle. The warm connection thinned to a thread. The name was spoken, the bond begun. But the scale that carried it was failing, and Symphira now held only half of what she had found.

Chapter 2

The broken scale lay in Symphira's palm, split again down the middle. The thread of warmth to her dragon's mind still held, but barely. She needed a whole heart-scale to make the bond strong. A dragon shed one such scale only rarely, and she did not know if any survived unbroken. If she poured her magic into a wrong guess, she might snap the thin thread she had left. She climbed onto the dragon's back and spoke the choice aloud. "We need a place your soul remembers." The dragon's head turned. Through the thread she felt a pull, faint but steady, like a compass finding north. She trusted it. They lifted off from her cloud-wrapped fortress and flew past the edge of her world. They landed in a forest where every leaf was gold. Great trunks curved up like the walls of a hall. Carved marks ran along the roots. The dragon lowered its head and breathed in, slow and deep. The pull in Symphira's mind grew warm. This was a place it knew. A bird woke in the high branches. It was large as a horse, its feathers red and orange flame, a crown of small stars burning above its head. It dropped to a low bough and fixed one blue eye on Symphira. She felt no fear from her dragon, only a strange hush, as if the two beasts had met before. "I search for a whole heart-scale," Symphira said. "My bond is cracked. I don't know if one still exists." The phoenix clicked its beak. It spread one wing toward a hollow between two roots. There, half buried in gold leaves, lay a nest of ash. Symphira climbed down and brushed the ash aside. Beneath it sat a single scale, shaped like a heart, flawless. No crack ran across it. It caught the light and sparkled like the night sky. Her breath caught. Here was the thing she had feared might not exist. But the phoenix stepped between her and the nest. It lowered its crowned head and waited. She understood. This scale was kept here, guarded. It would not come for free. Symphira had one thing of worth. She opened her hand and let her magic bloom gold above her palm, a gift of pure light. The phoenix leaned close and drank it in. Its stars burned brighter. Then it stepped aside. She lifted the whole scale. It was warm, and under her fingers she felt a strong, steady drum. The dragon lowered its great head beside her. For one moment, through the old cracked thread, she felt its hope. Symphira held the answer at last. A whole heart-scale survived, and now it was hers. But the name still lived inside the old broken scale, and a new one waited inside this flawless one. To finish the bond, she would have to wake the name again. And she did not yet know if both scales could sing as one.

Symphira held both scales in her open hands. The whole one drummed strong and warm. The broken one, split again down its middle, pulsed faint and slow. The name still lived inside the cracked scale. To move it into the whole scale, she needed heat, and her dragon carried the only fire that could wake it. But that fire incinerated whatever it touched. One wrong breath would melt the broken scale and burn the name away. She climbed down and laid both scales side by side on the ground between the great golden trunks. "I can't aim this," she told her dragon. "You have to." Through the thin thread she pushed one picture: a flame small as a candle, nothing more. The dragon lowered its vast head until its jaw hung above the scales. Smoke leaked from its teeth. Symphira's breath caught. If it gave too much, she would lose everything. The dragon breathed. A thread of golden fire slid out, no wider than a finger. It touched the broken scale first. Symphira's hands clenched. The cracked surface glowed. She waited for it to run like wax. It held. The gold light sank into the fractures and the faint drum grew louder. Inside the broken scale, the name woke and began to move. "The other one," she whispered. "Now." The dragon tipped the flame toward the whole scale. The two scales glowed together, broken and flawless, their light bleeding into one pool between the roots. Symphira felt the name lift from the cracked scale. It crossed the small gap. For one heartbeat it hung in the fire, belonging to neither scale. Then the broken scale split one last time and went dark. The name was gone from it. Symphira's chest tightened. She looked at the whole scale. Its drum had stopped. The forest went silent. She had gambled the name on a guess, and the guess had emptied both vessels. She reached for the whole scale with shaking fingers. It was warm. Under her skin a new drum started, slow, then steady, then strong. The name had crossed. It lived in the flawless scale now, held in a vessel that would not crack. The old broken scale lay in pieces, spent and useless. Through the thread Symphira felt the change at once. The faint compass-pull swelled into a clear, warm current. Her dragon lifted its head and looked at her with both eyes. For the first time she felt its thought arrive whole, not in scraps. The name was safe. The vessel was strong. But the thread was not yet a bond. The name sat inside the new scale like a seed in ground. To wake it into a true soulbond, she would have to speak it aloud over the scale, and she did not yet know where such a naming could safely be done.

Chapter 4

The whole scale drummed strong in Symphira's palm, and the name inside it pulled her like a hook behind the ribs. She had spoken names over scales before, in forests and on open ground. But this pull felt wrong for those places. It dragged sideways, past the edge of the sky, toward some other world. She turned on the dragon's broad back, searching. The current wanted her to cross to where it led. She had no door to reach it. "You feel it too," she said. Through the thread her dragon answered, not in words but in a steady lean toward the horizon. Its golden skin flickered with shifting color, and its head swung the same way the scale pulled. The two of them agreed. The naming had to happen there, beyond this world. She did not know how to get beyond this world. Symphira closed her eyes and followed the pull, not with her feet but with her mind. It bent down, toward a peak below them. She opened her eyes and saw it: a pale building crowning a lone mountaintop. Its dome curved like cupped hands. Tall windows glowed with soft light from within. The scale's pull aimed straight at its heart. "Down," she told the dragon. It folded its wings and dropped. They landed on the stone steps that ringed the tower. Symphira slid off and climbed to a narrow door. She pushed it open. Inside, the air hummed. One great window filled the far wall, and a point of light hung at its center, bright as a trapped star. The pull in her chest yanked toward that light. This was the crossing. She stepped closer. The light widened as she neared, spreading until the window was no longer glass but an opening. Through it she saw not the valley behind the tower but a strange sky, dark and streaked with gold. The pull nearly lifted her off her feet. Her dragon pressed its head through the doorway behind her, filling the room, its eyes fixed on the far sky. "That's the way," Symphira said. She reached into the light. Her fingers passed through cold air into warm. The window was a gate, and it was open. But she could not pass. The gate held room for one slender Faye, no more. Her dragon could never fit through it. Symphira drew her hand back. The scale drummed harder, angry at the wait. She had found the crossing. The naming could only wake on the far side. Yet the one who carried the fire, the one whose name she meant to speak, could not follow her through. She stood at the open gate, holding the strong scale, and understood the new trap. She had a door at last. It would let her through alone, and leave her dragon behind.
