Chapter 1

The Chosen One had burned through six batches before he admitted the text was lying to him by omission. He sat at his crowded desk, robe hood pushed back, and pressed his thumbs against his eyes. The scrap of parchment lay flat under a glass weight, its edges black and crumbling. He had copied every legible word into his own hand a hundred times. He knew the sequence. He knew the temperatures. He did not know what to put in the crucible first. Without the first ingredient, the rest was noise. He had learned this the slow way. Sulfur alone charred. Mercury alone slid off the glass. Salt with either turned the mixture gray and dead. The formula on the scrap promised the process that had first pulled a living thing out of lifeless matter, and from that process he meant to draw an elixir that would end his own dying. But the missing word sat where the fire had eaten the page. He stood and crossed the lab. Glass vessels ticked as they cooled. Copper pipes ran up the walls to the chimneys. He had built this place alone over thirty years, and no one had knocked on the door in nine. He preferred it. Company asked questions he did not want to answer. He took down his staff from its bracket and used the emerald tip to nudge aside a stack of older notebooks on the low shelf. Behind them sat a wooden cage he had not opened in a season. Inside, the toad blinked at him. Mushrooms crowded its back in a pale ring. He had caught it in the marsh two years ago and kept it for its skin oils, which he had never needed. He lifted the cage to the desk and studied the animal. The fungi on its back were not decoration. They fed on the toad and the toad fed on them. Neither was alive without the other. He had written that in his own margin, years back, and forgotten it. He read the burned scrap again. The verb he had translated as "combine" could also mean "host." The formula did not begin with a substance. It began with a living body that could carry the reaction. He set the cage down carefully. The first ingredient was not a mineral. It was a vessel. Something already alive, willing to hold the process inside itself while the change occurred. He looked at his own hand on the desk, at the brown spots along the knuckles. He was sixty-one. He had assumed the elixir would work on him from the outside, poured into a cup. He pulled a blank sheet toward him and began a new list. At the top he wrote: subject. Below it: toad. Below that, after a long pause, he wrote his own name and did not cross it out. Outside, the wind moved in the chimneys. He reached for a clean flask.
