Chapter 1

Thorne Nightshade had three days to find his fated mate before the shadow-court gave her to another man. He knew this because the court had already sent the binding writ. He did not know her name. He did not know her face. He only knew the bond pulled at his chest like a hook, and it led nowhere he could follow. He stood in the great hall of his dark palace, and he could not use it. His panther paced the cold stone beside him. The cat sensed his fury and would not settle. Thorne had spent a lifetime learning to look like nothing frightened him. His shoulders were wide. His voice was low and hard. But the writ shook in his hand, and he hated that no one could see how much this frightened him. The court forbade the bond. A dark fairy of his blood was not meant to claim a fated mate. If the court found her first, they would bind her to a loyal noble and be done with the danger. Thorne would spend forever knowing she lived and could never be his. So he went to the one person who might see what he could not. The blind seer kept her chamber below the palace, where the air smelled of wax and old smoke. She did not turn when he entered. She never needed to. "You walk louder when you're afraid," Cassandra Veil said. She sat with her staff across her knees. The crystal at its head glowed a slow, sick purple. Her white eyes stared past him at nothing. "The court means to take her," Thorne said. "You know where she is. You've always known." Cassandra smiled, and it was not a kind smile. "I know a great many things I'm paid to forget." Thorne crossed the room and knelt. This was the thing no one would believe of him. The dark fairy who made lords flinch now knelt on the floor and begged a blind woman. "Please," he said. "They gave me three days." Her face changed. The staff went still. "They lied to you," she said. "The binding is set for dawn. Not three days. Tomorrow." The words hit him like a blow. He rose fast, and his panther snarled. "She lives past the northern ridge," Cassandra went on. "A cottage under the frost pines. She keeps a white leopard for a guardian. Go now, or you go to a wedding that isn't yours." Thorne was already moving. His cloak swept the floor. "Fairy," Cassandra called after him. He stopped. "When they learn I told you, the court will hunt us both. You've made me your enemy's enemy. Do not waste it." Thorne looked back once. Then he ran for the doors, the panther at his heel, into a night that gave him until sunrise and no more.

Chapter 2

Thorne reached the frost pines before dawn. The cottage sat under them, small and dark, with faint light in the windows. Carved moons marked the timber, and dried herbs hung by the door. His panther slowed. Between Thorne and the door stood a white leopard, still as stone. Its blue eyes fixed on him. It did not growl. It only watched, and it would not move. Thorne took one step. The leopard lowered its head. He felt the meaning in that motion. Come closer and there will be blood. His shadow magic stirred, ready to seize the beast by the throat. He had done worse to lesser threats. But past the leopard, past the door, his mate was sleeping. If she woke to find her guardian choking in shadow, she would fear him forever. Force would win the yard and lose the bond. So Thorne stopped. He knelt in the frost, as he had knelt for the seer. The leopard's ears turned. He raised one hand slow and called his raven from the dark above. The bird dropped to his wrist, feathers shining blue and violet, eyes bright and clever. It carried no harm. Any guardian could sense that. Thorne took a small purple flower cluster from his cloak. He had picked it on the ridge, where it glowed against the snow. He tied it to the raven's leg with a thin cord. Then he added the locket, silver and shaped like a heart, two rings woven at its center. Inside he had set nothing yet. That was the point. It was empty, waiting for her face. "Take these to her," he told the raven. "No tricks. Just this." The raven lifted off. It flew low, past the leopard's nose, to the cottage sill. The leopard's head swung to follow. It did not spring. The bird tapped the glass with its beak. Once. Twice. Thorne waited on his knees in the cold. His heart pounded harder than in any fight. A shape moved behind the window. The light shifted. Then the door opened. She stood there in a soft black tunic, hair loose, a candle in her hand. She was the pull in his chest made real. Her eyes went to the raven on the sill, to the glowing flowers, to the locket swinging from its leg. She did not scream. She did not slam the door. The leopard rose and walked to her side. It pressed against her leg and looked back at Thorne. Then it sat. It let him stay. She lifted the locket and opened it. She saw the empty space inside. Her gaze moved across the yard and found him kneeling in the frost. "You sent a bird instead of forcing my door," she said. "Who are you?" "Thorne," he said. "I came before your dawn." She stepped onto the threshold. The leopard did not stop her.

Chapter 3

Morwenna held the empty locket in her palm. She did not step closer. Thorne stayed on his knees in the frost, letting her look. His panther waited at the tree line, black against the snow, still as the leopard beside her. He knew the truth. She had let him into her yard, but not into her trust. And dawn was coming. "You know my name now," Thorne said. "You should know the rest before the sun." She closed the locket. "Say it plain." "The shadow-court means to bind you to a noble at first light. Not me. A stranger. They arranged it without your word." He watched her face. "I came to warn you." Her eyes went hard. "Someone is breaking my wards. One each night. Working inward." She lifted her chin toward the dark wood. "Toward the center. Toward me." Thorne stood slow. The leopard tensed. He raised both hands. "The court sends the breaking. The binding needs you inside your own wards, alone and unguarded. They are clearing the path." "You expect me to believe a stranger in my frost." "No," he said. "I expect you to see for yourself." He told her of the sealed place beneath the ridge. Stone and iron, runes cut into the door, shelves of old court records inside. Every fated binding was written there. Every lie the court had signed. "Your name is in those records already," he said. "Dated for dawn. Go read it. I will not touch the door until you say." She studied him a long moment. "You could be leading me from my wards. Straight into the trap." "Then leave your guardian at the door," Thorne said. "If I lie, it takes my throat." That landed. Morwenna glanced at the leopard, then back at him. She pulled a cloak from inside the cottage and stepped into the snow. The leopard rose and walked at her side. Her wings caught the pale light, blue and violet, torn at one edge. "Show me," she said. "If the record is there, I decide what I do with it. Not you." "Agreed." They crossed the ridge as the sky grayed. The archive stood half-buried in the slope, its iron bands rusted, the carved runes worn but whole. Thorne broke the seal with a thread of shadow and stood back. Morwenna went in alone. The leopard blocked the doorway, watching Thorne. She found the shelf. She found the page. Her own name, her own binding, dated this dawn, signed by a hand she had never met. She read it twice. When she came out, her face had changed. "You told the truth," she said. Her voice stayed flat, but something behind it had shifted. "They lied to me for years." "Yes." "Then the binding happens whether I run or not." She folded the page into her cloak. "I need to know how to stop it. And I think you know who is coming next."
