Chapter 1

Trunks had broken three training robots this week, and he still couldn't turn his hair gold. He stood in the gym at the base of the sleek white tower, fists shaking, teeth clenched, willing the power to come. His father had done it once in a fit of pure rage. Trunks had read the old data logs a hundred times. The transformation needed fury, raw and total. But Trunks was calm. He ate breakfast. He slept well. Nobody here wanted him dead. That was the problem. He punched the training dummy until his knuckles split. The machine beeped and logged his power level. Still the same number. Still not enough. He screamed at the ceiling, but screaming on purpose felt fake. You can't fake rage, he thought. You have to earn it. The gym lights flickered. Then they died. Trunks froze. The backup power should have kicked in. It didn't. A low sound came from the hall, like plates of armor sliding together. Something had cut the tower's energy from the inside. A figure walked through the dark doorway. Lean, green and purple, with a long segmented tail that dragged across the floor. Trunks had never met him, but he knew the shape from the warnings his father left behind. Cell. The creature built to be perfect. The thing that fed on other fighters to grow stronger. "Son of the prince," Cell said. His voice was soft, almost bored. "You smell like your father. Weaker, though." Trunks stepped back. "How did you get in here?" Cell smiled and flicked his tail. "I walked. Your walls are decoration." He tilted his head. "I came for a measurement. Show me what you can do." Trunks threw a punch. Cell caught his fist without looking. The grip crushed down until Trunks felt bone grind. He gasped and swung with his other arm. Cell blocked it, then drove a knee into his ribs. Trunks hit the far wall and slid to the floor. "Disappointing," Cell said. He walked closer, slow and patient. "I expected a spark. You have none." Trunks spat blood. He tried to rise. Cell stepped on his hand and pressed. The pain was white and huge. And under the pain, something new began to move. Not fear. Heat. "Your bloodline ends quietly," Cell said. He raised his palm. Light gathered there, aimed at Trunks's chest. Something in Trunks snapped loose. The heat tore up through his spine and burst behind his eyes. He heard himself roar, and it was not fake this time. The floor cracked under him. His hair stood up and flashed gold. The gym lit up like noon. Cell staggered back, his smile gone. "There it is," he said. Trunks stood, glowing, shaking, whole. He had the power now. But Cell had come to measure it. And he had found exactly what he was hunting for.

The gold drained out of him an hour after Cell left. Trunks stood in the dark gym, hands empty, hair fallen flat and purple again. He had held the power. Now he couldn't find it. He closed his eyes and reached for the heat in his spine. Nothing came. He punched the wall until his knuckles bled, but the number on the machine stayed small. The transformation had come from a death threat. He could not threaten himself. So he went looking for a fight. He grabbed his sword from the rack and left the tower. He found Kazan in the training yard, another Saiyan who drifted in and out of the tower looking for sparring. Kazan outmatched him in every match they'd ever fought, and he never let Trunks forget it. "You again," Kazan said. He didn't rise from the dirt. He spun a stone on his knuckle and watched it. "You've got that look. Like you want something from me." "Fight me," Trunks said. "Try to kill me. I need the edge." Kazan laughed and stood. "You want me to scare the gold out of you." He cracked his neck. "Fine. But I don't fake it." They hit the dirt hard. Kazan was faster. He broke through Trunks's guard and drove him down, then pinned his throat under one boot. Trunks clawed at the leg. He reached for the heat again. He told himself he was dying. But part of him knew Kazan would stop. The lie wouldn't hold. The power stayed buried. Kazan stepped back, disgusted. "You're chasing it backward," Kazan said. He spat in the dirt. "Rage isn't a trick you pull. It comes when something you can't stand to lose is on the line. You had it once. What did you lose that day?" Trunks sat up, breathing hard. He had lost nothing that day. Cell had threatened his life, and his body had answered on its own. That was the trap. He could not manufacture the moment, and he could not wait for Cell to come kill him. He picked up his sword and looked at the blue hilt. His father had carried a blade too. His father had turned gold in a fit of loss, not training. Trunks finally understood the thing he'd been getting wrong all week. The power didn't obey fear for himself. It obeyed what he refused to let happen to someone else. "I've been asking the wrong question," Trunks said. He stood and sheathed the sword. Kazan frowned. "Where are you going?" "To stop guarding my own life." Trunks turned toward the tower. Cell was still out there, measuring, choosing a target. If Trunks waited to be the victim, he'd lose before the fight began. He had to find the person Cell would threaten next, and be standing in front of them when it happened. That was the only trigger he could trust. The golden power had a key now. He just had to put someone he loved in danger's path to turn it.

Chapter 3

Trunks found Mai waiting outside the tower the next morning. She leaned against the wall, hands in her coat pockets, watching him with those sharp blue eyes. He had not told her about Cell. He did not want to. But she already knew something was wrong. "You've been gone every night," Mai said. "Fighting Kazan. Bleeding. Come back worse each time." She stepped close. "Tell me the truth." So he did. He told her about Cell, about the gold power he could not hold, about the key he had finally understood. The power came when he protected someone he loved. Mai listened without flinching. Then she said the thing he feared most. "Then I'll help you train," she said. "Put me where you need me." Kazan met them at the sealed chamber. He slapped the door, and it hissed open. Inside, a year could pass in a day. "You want control," Kazan said. "Not just one lucky burst. We drill it here. Over and over." They went in. Kazan played the threat. He grabbed Mai, twisted her arm, made her cry out. Trunks felt the heat climb his spine. His hair flickered gold. But Kazan always stopped before real harm, and the lie broke. The gold drained. Just like with the throat under the boot. "It isn't real," Kazan said, breathing hard. "Your body knows I'd never finish it. You need the real thing." Mai wiped her arm and stood straight. "Then we stop pretending," she said. "We go to the arena. We make Cell come to us." Trunks shook his head. "That's suicide." "It's the only teacher left," Kazan said. He looked at Trunks hard. "You can't fake loss. So we give him a real target and dare him to take it." They left the chamber and traveled to the Cell Games Arena. The ring stood empty under a gray sky. Trunks's hands shook. He hated this plan. He hated needing it. Cell appeared at the ring's edge, calm, smiling. "The boy returns," he said. "And he brought me new numbers to read." Trunks stepped in front of Mai. "You want my power. Fight me." "I want the power behind the trigger," Cell said. In one blink he crossed the ring. His hand drove past Trunks and struck Mai in the chest. She flew back and hit the stone. She did not move. Something in Trunks snapped. The heat did not climb this time. It exploded. Gold light tore up his spine and burst from his skin. His hair stood and blazed. The ground cracked under his boots. This was real. No trick. No stopping. Kazan charged Cell to buy a second. Cell backhanded him across the arena. Kazan crashed into the far wall and dropped, limp and still. Trunks stood golden and shaking over Mai. He had found the trigger. He had it now, burning and locked in, with two people broken on the stone behind him. "Good," Cell said. "Now we begin."

Trunks stood golden over Mai. Her chest rose and fell, shallow and slow. Behind him, Kazan lay still against the far wall. The rage held this time. It did not drain. It burned clean and steady in his veins. Cell watched him from the center of the ring, smiling. "Now we begin," Cell said again. He crossed the stone in a blink. Trunks moved. He caught Cell's fist before it landed. The shock cracked the ground under their feet. For the first time, Cell's smile slipped. Trunks drove a knee into his gut and sent him skidding across the ring. The gold power obeyed him. He felt every muscle answer. They traded blows faster than the eye could follow. Trunks blocked, struck, blocked again. His fist caught Cell's jaw. Cell staggered. Then Cell's tail whipped around and cracked Trunks across the ribs. Trunks hit the seating tier and stone rained down on him. He pushed up. The gold did not fade. "Better," Cell said. He wiped green blood from his mouth. "But anger alone will not save her." Trunks glanced at Mai. Her fingers had curled against the floor. She was alive. She was watching him. That was enough. He launched off the broken stone and drove both fists down. Cell crossed his arms to block. The impact split the ring's center. A crater opened under them. Kazan stirred. He dragged himself to one elbow, face bloody. "Finish it, Trunks," he rasped. "You have the form. Use it before he reads enough." The warning landed hard. Cell had come to measure him. Every second of this fight gave Cell more numbers. Trunks had to end it now, or Cell would learn how to beat the gold. Trunks cupped his hands at his side. Light gathered between them, bright and hot. Cell's eyes narrowed. He raised his own hands to answer. Trunks fired first. The blast tore across the ring and swallowed Cell whole. The arena shook. Dust rose in a wall. When it cleared, Cell stood at the ring's edge. His armor was scorched. One arm hung limp. But he was laughing. "Magnificent," Cell said. "I have what I needed." He flexed the broken arm, and it healed before Trunks's eyes. "I know your power now. Every limit. Every ceiling." He stepped back onto the air. "Next time I will match it. Train hard, boy. You will need more than this." Then Cell was gone, a streak against the gray sky. Trunks dropped to his knees beside Mai. The gold held one moment longer, then released. His hair fell dark. She opened her eyes and gripped his hand. "You held it," she whispered. "I held it," Trunks said. "But he saw everything." He looked at the empty sky. He had won the fight and learned the truth. His gold form was no longer enough. Cell would return stronger, and Trunks had to climb higher before that day.
