Chapter 1

Valaria slipped through the palace garden at dawn, counting the faces she'd saved. Three servants who'd fled arranged marriages. Two scholars marked for exile. One guard who'd refused an execution order. The network grew with each escape, but so did the risk of discovery. She found the ornate key on her windowsill that morning, its gold surface catching the light. The engravings matched the doors to the council chamber where she'd met her last contact. Someone had been close enough to take it. Close enough to know what it meant. The key sat there like a question she couldn't ignore—would this stranger destroy everything she'd built, or ask to help her build more? Valaria picked it up, turning it over in her palm, and realized her protection had already started to crack. The memorial statue in the lower courtyard gave her the answer. Someone had left a sheathed sword propped against the stone base, its polished surface too bright to miss. Valaria recognized it from the armory—the ceremonial blade her contact had worn three nights ago. She turned slowly, scanning the shadows between the columns. Movement flickered near the east wall. A figure stepped forward just enough for the light to catch their face, then retreated. They'd followed her to the memorial. Watched her meetings. Taken the key to prove it. But instead of reporting her, they'd returned both items where only she would find them. The stranger's silence was its own kind of answer—not exposure, but an invitation to trust someone new with her network's survival. Valaria walked to the garden's edge where scattered golden scales marked the watcher's position. They'd been hiding behind the dragon statue for days, judging by the pattern. She knelt and pressed one scale into the soft earth, then another beside it—two marks where one had fallen. A signal. The watcher would understand she'd found their hiding spot and chosen to leave them unharmed. When she returned to her chambers, the key was gone from her desk. In its place sat a folded note with four names—outcasts who needed help. The watcher had made their choice, and Valaria's network had gained its first true partner.
