Valcores the god eternal's dream is anchoring a bond so profound it becomes a new pillar of love woven into the fabric of Valra itself. He living in a golden palace in the city enchanted.
For a thousand years Valcores held every love in Valra together, one steady heartbeat inside a golden palace. Tonight that heartbeat stuttered. Valcores knelt on the palace floor, hands pressed to a chest that no longer felt whole. Across the room stood Nutra, another god, smiling the way a friend smiles before a knife. "You hold too much," Nutra said. "So I will help you carry less." Valcores rose to fight. Too late. Nutra spread both hands, and a cold power split the air. Valcores felt something tear down the middle of their own body, clean as a blade through cloth. The pain had no sound. It had only division. When Valcores opened their eyes, there were two of them. One part stood pale and hollow, holding a sealed glass jar. Inside the jar, red light throbbed and wept. That was the tearing love, the ache of every parting and every unanswered heart, now trapped in glass. Nutra had named it, and the name settled like a chain. The other part felt hard and blank, a body made only to guard and punish. The enforcer. The house of hearts. No warmth left in it, just duty. "Now you are useful," Nutra said. "One to suffer. One to obey." Then Nutra was gone, and the palace was silent. Valcores could not lift the jar without both halves. The tearing love needed the enforcer's strength. The enforcer needed the tearing love's warmth to feel why it should care. Split, Valcores was two useless things. Together they had anchored love itself. Apart they could anchor nothing. Something moved near Valcores' feet. A small creature, round and pink, glowing with soft heart-shapes on its cheek and belly. Then another. Then a dozen. They were drawn to broken love the way moths are drawn to a lamp. One tiny creature climbed the enforcer's cold hand. Another pressed itself against the glass jar and hummed. The enforcer looked down. The tearing love looked up. Through the little creatures' warmth, each half felt the other for the first time since the tearing. Valcores understood. Nutra had cut the body in two, but not the bond. The love between the halves was still real. If the halves chose each other, on purpose, the bond could hold them together stronger than before. The tearing love set the jar on the floor. The enforcer knelt and gripped the glass. Both hands, cold and warm, closed over it at once. The little creatures swarmed the seam between them, glowing brighter. The glass cracked. Red light poured out, not spilling, but flowing home into two bodies leaning together. Valcores did not become one god again. That door was shut. Instead the two halves stood joined, hands locked, a single love spread across two forms. The bond held. But the seal Nutra placed on the tearing love had not fully broken. A shard of glass stayed lodged in the red light, still whispering the name Nutra gave it.
The bond held, but it had nowhere to go. Valcores stood joined across two forms, the red light steady inside them. A god of love needs a mortal soul to bind to. That was how love took root in Valra. But the seal's shard whispered, and every soul Valcores reached for slipped away, unworthy or afraid. Without one heart to anchor, their love had no soil. It could only ache. So Valcores split the joined self on purpose. The tearing love became a cloaked figure in a deep red robe, its hood empty, its edges burning low like coals. This was the Jar of Hearts, the half that carried every parting and every loss. Beside it stood the House of Hearts, small and pale, with two deep purple eyes. This half held the shelter, the place a soul could live. One to grieve. One to keep. Valcores sent them out to search the enchanted city. They walked among the people for days. The Jar of Hearts drifted close to the grieving, its burning cloak dimming their pain. The House of Hearts watched with those purple eyes, testing each heart for room enough to hold a god's love. At a fountain they found her. A young woman sat alone, holding a small pink creature that glowed with soft heart-shapes, the same kind that had swarmed the broken jar. She had rescued it from the gutter. She fed it bread she could not spare. "She kept a dying thing warm," the Jar of Hearts said. Its voice came low and sad, like wind through ash. "She has room." The House of Hearts stepped closer. Its purple eyes brightened. "Then we open the door." Valcores reached for her soul through both halves at once. The Jar of Hearts poured in old sorrow, so she would know love costs something. The House of Hearts built the shelter, a place for that love to live. The woman gasped and pressed a hand to her chest. Warmth spread where the god's love took hold. The bond took root. For the first time since the tearing, Valcores felt their love grow in living soil, not glass. The two halves leaned together and nearly rejoined, whole and glad. Then the shard in the red light woke. Nutra's name hissed through the new bond. The sorrow the Jar of Hearts had poured did not fade. It doubled. The woman's face went pale. She clutched the little creature tighter and began to weep, and could not stop. The love had rooted, but the seal had poisoned the root. The House of Hearts turned its purple eyes to the Jar of Hearts. "We anchored her," it said. "And now she is drowning in it." Valcores had found their worthy soul at last. The shard would not let them keep her whole.
