Chapter 1

Valeria Nocturne climbed the courthouse steps with a folded brief tucked under her arm. She had come to file another petition about the missing humans, hoping the magistrates would finally listen. Clearing her family's name and finding the true killer was the only goal that mattered now. The magenta walls loomed behind her, black roses curling along the stone. A small obsidian tree glowed pink near the bottom step. Beneath it, Xander Korbin Xiran waited, gloved hands folded, eyes sharp. "Valeria. We need to talk." He blocked her path without raising his voice. He held up a crimson-stained newspaper. The headline screamed about a fifth victim. "Five now. Found near your family's archives. You know something. You are hiding the monster, or hiding for it." Valeria's jaw tightened. A flock of pink-lit crows scattered from the tree branches above them. "You think I would shelter a killer of my own neighbors? Look closer, Xander. The clues point past both our houses." She pushed the newspaper back into his chest. "If you want the truth, stop hunting me and hunt with me." Xander studied her for a long moment. Then he lowered the paper. "One night. You show me what you have. If you lie, I bring this to the magistrates myself." He stepped aside. The accusation was gone, but a fragile pact stood in its place — and somewhere, a sixth victim was already being chosen.

Chapter 2

Valeria reached the Nocturne Archives before moonrise, her gothic folder of roses pressed tight to her ribs. The pact with Xander was simple. One night. One look at her proof. She climbed the steps beneath the magenta spires and waited at the doors. Xander came up the path empty-handed. His gloves were clenched. His coat was open. Whatever he had carried before was gone. "My file is missing," he said. He stopped beneath the bleeding rose archway near the entrance. "I had it an hour ago. Now it's gone. Only your people knew I was bringing it here." Valeria felt the heat rise in her throat. "You think I stole it? I have been here, waiting for you." She held up her own folder. "This is what I promised. Take it. Read it tonight. If I wanted your evidence hidden, I would not have opened my doors to you." Xander studied her face for a long moment. Then he took the folder. His shoulders dropped a fraction. "Then someone followed me. Someone who did not want our lists to meet." He looked back at the path, then up at the dark windows of the archives. "They know we are working together." Valeria's hand tightened on the iron rail. The alliance held, but the killer had moved first. Their secret was no longer secret, and somewhere in the night, stolen pages were already burning.

Chapter 3

Valeria left the archives with the night humming against her skin. The stolen file weighed on her more than her own folder ever had. She turned toward her sister's cafe, needing one steady voice before dawn. The pink coffee house glowed ahead, its windows warm against the dark street. She never reached the front door. A shout cracked from the alley behind the cafe. Valeria ran, boots skidding on wet stone, and rounded the gothic dumpster where the trash lamps flickered. Vexxir lay against the dark metal, one hand pressed to her ribs. Her white hair was streaked red. A tall shape in a wide hat and ragged cloak stood over her, blue lenses glinting like cold lamps. The Mourning Monster. Valeria's breath stopped. Then the tavern door down the lane banged open. A pack of drunks spilled out laughing, lanterns swinging, voices loud and stupid and beautiful. The hooded figure jerked back, melted into the shadows, and was gone before Valeria could draw her blade. She dropped to her knees beside Vexxir. "Stay with me." Vexxir gripped her wrist, jaw tight. "I saw the mask," she said, calm and clipped. "Long beak. Blue eyes. He knew my name, Val." Among the stumbling witnesses, one figure stood very still at the lane's mouth, a plague mask under a wide hat. Mortis VonPlaag. He stared at the blood, then at his own gloved hands, and murmured, "Another. I was too slow. Again." Valeria pressed her cloak to her sister's side. The killer had hunted her blood now. The alliance with Xander was no longer about clearing a name. It was about keeping Vexxir alive.

Valeria half carried Vexxir through the dark streets, blood warm against her palm. The healer's cottage rose ahead, its magenta walls and crooked roof glowing under lantern light. Crows shifted on the eaves and watched them pass. Valeria pounded the door until it opened, and steady hands took her sister from her arms. She stood on the threshold while the healer worked. Vexxir's breathing slowed. Her color came back. Valeria touched the silver locket at her throat, the one with both their faces inside, and felt the metal warm under her shaking fingers. The healer nodded once. Safe. For now. Valeria stepped back into the street alone. She walked without choosing a direction. Her legs felt thin as paper. She did not cry until she passed the park, where a tree strung with pink neon branches buzzed softly in the dark. Then her knees nearly folded. A tall shape stepped into her path beneath a tall iron streetlight that cast purple shadows on the cobblestones. Xander. His dark coat was open, his face tight with worry. "I heard," he said. "Tell me she lives." "She lives," Valeria whispered. The locket bit into her closed fist. Her shoulders shook. Xander did not ask another question. He stepped close and pulled her against his chest, one gloved hand cradling the back of her head. She wept into his coat, hard and ugly, while he held her steady under the violet light. When the worst passed, she pulled back and wiped her face. Xander kept one hand on her arm. "We stop hunting from the outside," he said. "Tonight you come with me. We work together, openly. No more secrets between our houses." Valeria nodded. The alliance was no longer fragile. It was a bond sealed in her sister's blood, and she would not let it break.
