Chapter 1

Vera Nox swore she'd never touch the impossible vault. Yet the blueprints were spread across her workbench, drawn in her own hand. She traced the door with one finger and stopped. The measurements were guesses. She didn't know the vault's real make or model. Without that, she'd waste weeks prepping tools for the wrong lock. She pulled the stethoscope from her neck and set it down. Paint stained her jumpsuit sleeves. She had built a quiet life fixing engines. This job would end that life or fund it forever. One clean crack, then out for good. But she couldn't crack a door she'd never seen. The building sat behind glass and guards. She couldn't walk in. So she needed eyes she could send where she couldn't go. That was why she'd trained the bird. She opened the shutter. The desert hawk waited on the sill, scarred and still. Old wounds crossed its chest in pale lines. It watched her with one sharp eye and did not flinch. Vera had found it half-dead a year ago and fed it by hand. It never softened. It simply stayed. "You've done worse for less," she told it. She strapped a small camera to its leg and tightened the band. The hawk let her. It always let her, then made her earn it. She carried it outside and lifted her arm. "Go up. Circle the roof. Show me the door behind the loading dock." The bird gripped her wrist, claws pricking skin. Then it dropped, snapped its wings wide, and climbed. Vera lost it against the sun. She waited, thumb over the receiver, breath tight. Minutes passed. A shadow crossed the yard. The hawk was hunting, not filming. Her plan meant nothing to a creature that only obeyed on its own terms. Then the screen woke. Rooftops tilted below. The bird banked hard and dove toward the rear of the building. The loading dock swung into frame. And there it was — the vault door, half-open for a delivery, its face turned to the light. Vera froze the image. A maker's plate sat riveted beside the hinge. She zoomed until the letters sharpened. A brand. A serial line. A model number she knew by heart from twenty years of work. Her stomach dropped. She had prepped for the wrong door entirely. This model used a glass relocker — one wrong move and the bolts froze forever. Her blueprints were now worthless. But she knew exactly what she faced. The hawk landed on the sill and shook its wings. Vera unstrapped the camera without looking at it. She was already tearing the old blueprints in half. "Alright," she said. "New plan." She swept the scraps aside and reached for a clean sheet. The door was real now. And it was worse than she'd feared.
