Chapter 1

Wade Beaumont had turned his cabin into a home for hurt animals, and now the flood was trying to drown them all. Rain had fallen for two days. Brown water climbed the porch steps of his log cabin, past the moss that hung from the timber. Inside, in crates and washtubs, waited every creature he had rescued this season. Three turtles. A one-eyed frog. Two young gators he'd pulled from a drying ditch. The water rose an inch every hour, and Wade could not carry them all at once. He stood on the porch in his boots and flannel, coffee gone cold in his fist. The high ground sat past a stretch of open water, too far to wade with an armful of frightened animals. If he made two trips, the first crate would sit alone while the second drowned. He needed help, and he lived alone with his wife in the middle of the swamp. Then the hound came swimming. A lean Blue Tick Hound cut through the flood, blue-gray coat slicked flat, long ears trailing behind him. He had shown up at the cabin a week ago and never left. Now he climbed the steps, shook once, and looked at Wade like he'd been waiting for orders. The dog did not fear the water. He belonged in it. Wade knelt. "You want to work, boy?" The hound barked once. Wade tied a rope between two crates and lashed them across the dog's back like saddlebags. He set the turtles inside, then the frog. "Take 'em to the willow," he said, and pointed at the weeping tree that stood on the high rise, its long branches sweeping the water. The hound plunged in and swam straight for it. Wade watched him climb out beneath the willow and shake, crates dry, animals safe. They worked like that until dark. Wade carried the heavy gators himself, wading chest-deep while the hound guided the smaller crates across. The dog swam back for each load, ears streaming, never once turning toward the dry ridge to save himself. Wade's wife held a lantern from the willow and called the hound in each time he neared the shallows. By the last trip the water had swallowed the porch. Wade climbed onto the rise soaked and shaking. Every animal sat safe beneath the willow. The hound flopped against his leg, spent and proud. Wade looked back at the cabin. Only the roof and the hanging moss showed above the flood now. His shelter was gone. The animals were saved, but he had no dry place to keep them, and the willow would not hold them long. He scratched the hound's wet ears. "We're gonna need a bigger place," he said. "A real one. Built high." His wife met his eyes across the lantern light. The idea had a shape now. Not a cabin that flooded. A true sanctuary, raised above the water, for every creature the bayou tried to take.
