Chapter 1

Willo set down the cracked mug and looked at their hands. The scars crossed each palm in lines that hadn't been there five years ago. Every blessing left a mark. Every item that passed through the shop carried a piece of them forward into Krakenring, and that was fine. That was the trade. That was how the chop shop stayed alive. But the woman at the door wasn't fine. She held the silver rose out like an accusation, and Willo saw the problem immediately. The petals had gone from bright silver to a sick gray-green. Black spots crawled across the surface like mold. The gold stem bent wrong in her grip, soft as wet paper, and the leaves crumbled into dark flakes that stuck to her fingers. The blessing hadn't just failed. It had reversed. Willo reached for the rose and felt their palm burn where the stem touched skin, a sharp heat that meant the protection had broken and turned hungry. They dropped it on the workbench and watched a brown stain spread across the wood beneath it. The woman was shouting now, demanding her coin back, demanding answers, but Willo was already running through the list of what they'd blessed last week and coming up empty on reasons why this one would rot. The hybrid cub at the woman's feet snarled through shark teeth, its tentacle mane writhing as it snapped at Willo's ankles. The chain collar rattled. Willo stepped back and felt the burn in their palm spread up their wrist. The woman grabbed the cub's collar and yanked it back, still shouting, but Willo was staring at the roses woven into the chain and understanding clicked into place. Someone had blessed the rose before Willo touched it. A double blessing, one layered over another, and the magic had eaten itself from the inside out. Willo pulled three coins from their pocket and dropped them on the counter without looking at the woman. She grabbed them and left, the door slamming hard enough to rattle the frame. Willo wrapped their burned hand in cloth and added a new rule to the wall above the workbench in charcoal: check for old blessings first. Outside, the statue of thorns and roses stood guard over the entrance, same as always. Willo locked the door and went back to the workbench. The rotted rose still oozed on the wood. They picked it up with cloth and carried it to the back room where failed work went to finish dying. Three coins wouldn't fix what the woman lost, but the refund kept her from talking. The burn on Willo's hand would fade in a week. The new rule on the wall wouldn't. The shop would keep running, but now every item that came through the door would get checked twice before the blessing started. That was the cost of staying open.
