Chapter 1

Willow freezes mid-step when the fox stumbles out from the underbrush and drops at her feet. The animal's sides heave. Her lips pull back in a weak snarl, showing teeth. But she doesn't run. She can't. Blood mats the fur along her injured side, and her three legs tremble with the effort of simply staying upright. Willow lowers herself to the ground without thinking. She moves in fractions. Her knees touch earth. Her hand slips into the canvas bag at her hip. The fox's snarl grows louder, but the sound is hollow, desperate. Willow's fingers find the small tin of salve she mixed yesterday in the sanctuary—yarrow and comfrey, steeped in oil. She sets it between them on the dirt. Then she shifts back. Just an inch. The fox's yellow eyes track her, wild and bright with fear. Willow waits. Her breath slows. Her body stills. For the first time in days, the fox doesn't try to flee.

Chapter 2

The fox collapses halfway through the morning. Willow watches from ten feet away, her body locked in place, as the animal's legs give out beneath her. The fox lands hard on her injured side. A fresh line of blood spreads through the matted fur. Willow doesn't think. She runs. Her boots pound the earth as she crosses the distance between them in seconds. The fox tries to rise but fails. Her yellow eyes fix on Willow with pure terror, but her body won't obey. Willow drops to her knees and presses both hands against the wound. Blood wells between her fingers, hot and fast. The fox's breathing turns shallow. Willow's mind races through every herb she knows—every mixture in her sanctuary that could seal a wound this deep. Yarrow won't be enough. She needs shepherd's purse. Nettle root. Something to stop the bleeding now, before the fox's heart pumps her empty. She strips off her outer shirt and binds it tight around the fox's ribs. The fabric darkens immediately. The fox's snarl fades to a whimper. Willow keeps pressure on the wound with one hand and reaches for her bag with the other. Her fingers shake as she pulls out a second tin—the one she made for deep cuts, thick with powdered nettle and goldenseal. She peels back the soaked shirt just enough to pack the paste directly into the wound. The fox jerks once, then goes still. Too still. Willow's breath catches. But then the fox's ribs expand. Once. Twice. The bleeding slows. Willow doesn't move her hands. She counts each breath the fox takes and watches the red stop spreading. The animal's eyes stay open, locked on Willow's face. There's no trust there. Only exhaustion. But the fox doesn't pull away. She can't. And for the first time, Willow realizes that trust might not be something the fox chooses to give—it might be something taken from her, one crisis at a time, until running is no longer possible. Willow sits back on her heels and looks at her blood-stained hands. The fox lies quiet beneath the makeshift bandage, her breathing steady but weak. Willow had wanted to earn this closeness through patience. She had imagined the fox coming to her, choosing her. But there was no choice here. Only need and the absence of flight. She wipes her palms on the grass and feels something shift inside her chest—not relief, but a hard new understanding. The fox is alive because Willow acted fast and held on tight. But the cost was every gentle approach she'd planned, every slow gesture meant to say I won't hurt you. She saved the fox's life. She also stole the fox's last defense. And now, as the animal's eyes follow her every breath, Willow knows she can't undo what she's done. Trust or surrender—she may never know which one she holds.
