Chapter 1

Willow knelt before the stone archway, her fingers tracing the symbols that flickered with pale light across its surface. The structure groaned. Dust rained from cracks spreading through the ancient walls. She pulled her journal from her satchel and sketched the glyphs with quick, practiced strokes. A lantern sat half-buried near the entrance, its metal body covered in more glowing symbols. Purple and blue dust swirled around it like smoke. Willow grabbed the lantern and held it up to the archway. The glyphs on both surfaces pulsed brighter, responding to each other. She needed to get inside before the whole thing came down. She copied three more symbols into her journal, then squeezed through the crumbling doorway just as a stone block crashed behind her. Inside, the lantern's light revealed walls covered in ancient spellwork, exactly what she'd been searching for. Willow's heart hammered as she swept the lantern across the chamber. Every surface held layers of symbols, some carved deep into stone, others painted in pigments that still glowed after countless years. She recognized three different writing systems layered over each other. The tower shuddered again, and a crack split the eastern wall. She had minutes at most. Her hands moved fast, sketching the most complete sequences she could find. The symbols described binding patterns, ways to knit power through living things. Through forests. She pressed her palm against a glyph that pulsed warm beneath her touch, and for one brief moment, she felt the spell wake. Then the ceiling groaned, and she ran for the exit, clutching her journal tight. Behind her, the tower collapsed into rubble and dust. Outside, Willow dropped to her knees in the clearing, coughing and shaking. She pulled a carved vessel from her pack and held it over her journal's open pages. The symbols she'd drawn began to glow, lifting from the paper like golden smoke. The vessel drew them in, preserving the ancient spellwork in a way ink never could. When the last glyph settled into the vessel's surface, a flame sparked to life at its tip. Willow stared at it, then at the pile of rubble that had been her eighteenth site. The binding patterns were real. The spells could still work. She finally had proof that the ancient knowledge could be mastered, and suddenly the center of the spiral didn't seem so frightening anymore.
