Chapter 1

Zade stepped onto the worn stone path and stopped. Ahead, the amphitheater waited, its sign lit for an announcement he had not given in years. Someone he wanted to trust would be watching tonight. He pressed a hand to his chest, where the small, stubborn want still burned, and made himself keep walking. He passed the golden sign and climbed the steps. The crowd hushed. He found her in the front row, quiet and steady, and spoke the words he had abandoned long ago. His voice held. When he stepped down, Kidara was waiting at the edge of the stage, watching him, not the crown. She held out the golden crown he had set aside before speaking. "You forgot this," she said. He took it, but did not put it back on. "I wanted you to see me first," he answered. She nodded once, and the wall between them thinned. Tomorrow there would be questions he could not duck. Tonight, for the first time in years, someone had looked at him and stayed. He walked with her down the marble steps, the crown heavy in his hands. The crowd was already moving on, hungry for what came next. Zade did not look back at the stage. He had returned. He had been seen. Whatever the court demanded tomorrow, this much was done, and could not be undone.

Chapter 2

Morning came thin and gray. Zade sat with the crown in his lap and a folded letter on the table. The seal was not his. It carried Kidara's mark, and a title beneath her name he had never seen. He read it twice. His hands went still. Last night came back to him in pieces, and he could not tell which pieces had been true. He followed the letter's directions to a small cottage tucked behind a wall of ivy. The door looked worn, but inside the rooms stretched far beyond what the outside allowed. Kidara stood by a wide window, no longer hiding. She turned when he entered. "I wanted you to see me first," she said, echoing his own words back to him. Zade set the crown on her table. The wall between them was gone, but a new one stood in its place, made of everything she had not said. On the sill bloomed a blue flower he had pressed into her hand last night. It glowed brighter here, fed by the magic she had kept secret. Zade touched one crystal petal. "Was last night real?" he asked. "Yes," Kidara said. "I just wasn't finished showing you me." He breathed out slow. He picked up the bloom and left the crown. "Then finish," he said. She nodded, and began. She led him out the back. A tall blue crystal stood in the garden, taller than him, humming low. Its light marked her as a mage of rank, the kind who answered to no court. Zade looked at it, then at her. The bloom warmed in his hand. "I came here trusting last night," he said. "I still do." Kidara's shoulders dropped. She took his free hand. The crown stayed inside, on her table, where neither of them needed it now.
