Chapter 1

Zephyr Beaumont stopped at the mouth of the narrow passage and listened. The old quarter waited just beyond it, and somewhere past those walls hummed the thing he had crossed an ocean to find — the source that came before fire, before water, before any element had a name. He pressed a palm to the brick. The air crackled back at him. A lizard the size of his forearm guarded the way. Green scales, black stripes, glowing spines along its back. It had built a nest of fused crystals across the passage, a ring of jagged stone cradling eggs that pulsed with caught lightning. Behind the nest, a storage cube he had dropped weeks ago lay half-melted into the floor, its emerald facets reshaped by heat into a glittering shelf the creature used as a perch. Zephyr reached for fire. Nothing answered. He reached for air, water, earth. Silence in all four. The barrier was here too, thick as a closed door. He almost smiled. Whoever built this wall did not want him past it. That only sharpened him. He knelt and drew a small orb from his coat. He had spent the night winding it with copper thread and feeding it static from a storm drain. It glowed now, a soft round light veined with pink and blue. He rolled it slowly across the stone. The lizard's head snapped toward the gleam. It crept down from the cube, tongue flicking, spines lowering. It nosed the orb, then climbed it, then curled around it like a cat with a sun-warmed stone. Zephyr held out his wrist. The lizard climbed on, electricity humming under its feet without burning him. The passage stood open. Beyond it, the old quarter waited, and the silence in his blood deepened.

The lizard settled on his wrist as Zephyr stepped into the old quarter. The lane bent twice and opened onto a long stone wall. Faded glyphs ran across it in blue and green, worn smooth by rain and time. He felt the pull of the source somewhere past it. To go further, he had to read this wall. He set the lizard on a ledge and pulled an octagonal monocle from his coat. The blue frame was cold. The orange lens warmed the stone when he held it up. He moved along the wall, slow, careful. The glyphs sharpened, then slid out of focus. They refused him. He tried his father's old staff next, pressing the green stone to the carvings. The emerald flickered once and went dark. He stood back, jaw tight. The wall was a door, and he had no key. A small shape darted in from above. A blue seahorse-thing with four thin wings hovered near his shoulder, orange spines bright in the gloom. It chirped, circled the wall, and landed on a low stone. Footsteps followed. A lean figure with pale blue scales and a long spear stopped at the corner. "You're reading it wrong," Thessian Scaleheart said. He came closer and laid one clawed hand on the wall. "These marks aren't meant for eyes. They're meant for breath. My brother learned them before the seal went up. He taught me the first row." He looked at Zephyr without flinching. "I'll walk you through. I want what's behind this wall gone as much as you do." Zephyr lowered the monocle. He nodded once. Thessian set his palm flat and breathed across the stone, and the first glyphs warmed under his hand into shapes Zephyr could finally hold in his mind. The wall was no longer blind to him. He had a guide now, and a debt he had not asked for.

The first row of glyphs cooled under Thessian's hand. Zephyr stepped back from the wall and studied the man beside him. The debt sat between them like a third figure. He had to know what he had just agreed to. "Why this place," Zephyr asked. "Why this wall." Thessian lowered his spear. He did not look away. "I'm chasing the same thing you are," he said. "Not for power. For a door my people can walk through." He spoke of a quiet corner of the quarter, a tall carved post he had raised himself, marked with the names of those still living. A place waiting for a roof. Zephyr listened. The seahorse-thing landed on the post of his coat. He thought of his own small shelter across the city, an old fuel station packed with relics he had carried home, and the red bird that slept in its corner. He understood wanting a place that held still. "Help me reach the source," Thessian said, "and I'll read every row on this wall. Refuse me behind it and I'll know." His voice stayed level. "Shared stakes. Not oaths." Zephyr reached into his coat and pulled out a brass band he had carried for years, twin crests pressed into its face. He split it at the hinge. Half he kept. Half he passed to Thessian, who slid it over his wrist without ceremony. The metal caught the dim light once and dulled. "Party of two," Zephyr said. Thessian nodded and turned to the second row of glyphs. The wall was still closed. But now two men faced it, and the next breath would be his to give.
