Chapter 22

The water ring still hung in the air when the tree's voice returned. "One root of many," it said. "Seven trees remain. Each one hungers as I did. Bond them all, king, or your power stays half-grown." Adrean let the water fall. Seven more trees. Seven more debts of blood. He looked at the glowing spire beside him and knew the people would watch him bleed for each one. Far above, in the vast starlit chamber where a thousand gods sat, the king made of light rose from his seat. Chronos Luminar had spared Adrean's life at the trial. He gripped his staff, its clockface turning, and spoke to the gathered pantheons. "He grows past our reach," the god-king said. "I will watch the outcast myself." The gods murmured. One old god with a white beard stepped forward. Yahweh Christ, who had once hunted Adrean and then testified for his life, bowed his head. "Then send help," he said. "Not a blade. A guide he cannot refuse." Chronos Luminar turned his gold eyes toward a figure at the chamber's edge. She was already walking, unhurried, as if the whole council bent around her path. "Go to him," the god-king told her. Adrean felt the air change before he saw her. The spire's runes dimmed. His own breath slowed. A woman crossed the roots toward him, gold hair loose, a red jewel burning at her waist. She did not announce herself. She stepped over the tree's veins as though she owned the ground. "You bleed for trees," she said. Her voice pulled at him like a current. "Seven more will drain you dry before you finish. You need more than blood, king. You need people who will die for you." She smiled. "That is my work." Adrean knew her by the way his own body leaned toward her. The goddess of beauty. Sent by the very gods who wanted him caged. He set his jaw and held his ground. "You come from their chamber," he said. "Why would I trust a gift from Chronos Luminar?" "Because I am not his gift," Aphrodisia Divine said. She reached out and touched the tree's bark. It did not drink her. "He sent me to watch you. I came to be watched." She turned back to him. "The other seven trees sit in lands full of the godless. They will not open for pain alone. They open for a court. I can gather one for you faster than your fists." He studied her offer for a threat. His arc demanded followers, wives, power drawn away from the heavens. Here stood a goddess offering exactly that, sent by his enemies, choosing his side to spite them. He took her hand. His system chimed. NEW ALLY BOUND: Aphrodisia Divine. A second line burned beneath it. WORLD TREES BONDED: 1 OF 8. The spire's people opened their doors. The goddess had come to their king. Now Adrean had seven trees to claim, an enemy king watching every step, and a goddess at his side whose loyalty he could not yet measure.
