Chapter 23

The morning after the goddess arrived, Adrean left the glowing spire and walked into the city like a common man. Aphrodisia Divine had a plan. To gather a court, she said, he first had to be wanted. Not feared. She dressed him in plain clothes and sent him to work among the godless. "Live as they live," she told him. "Let them love the man before they kneel to the king." So Adrean took a job hauling crates in the market under the spire's shadow. He buried his power deep and became no one. Aphrodisia watched him from a distance, day after day. At first she smiled. Then she stopped smiling. Adrean did his work well. He lifted, he sweated, he learned names. But he never came to her. She sent messages through the market girls. He nodded and returned to his crates. Three days passed. Then four. The goddess who bent whole councils around her walk could not pull one man toward her. On the fifth day she found him at the loading dock. Her red jewel burned brighter than usual. "You ignore me," she said. Her voice shook, which surprised them both. "I gather your court. I bind your trees. And you carry boxes and forget my face." Adrean set down a crate. "You told me to live as they live. I obeyed." "I did not tell you to freeze me out." She stepped close. The dock workers slowed to stare, then hurried on when her eyes flashed. "I am the goddess of beauty. Men have burned cities for one look from me. You look through me." Then he understood. She had come to guide him, sent to be watched. Instead she watched him. And somewhere in five days of his plain, patient work, the goddess of beauty had fallen for the man who felt nothing for her. Her power moved outward. His moved inward. She could not touch him. "You feel this," Adrean said slowly. "You did not plan to." Her jaw tightened. She said nothing, which said everything. Adrean saw the danger now. A goddess in love was not a bound ally. She was a storm. But he also saw the gift. Chronos Luminar had sent her to spy. Now she wanted Adrean more than she wanted her masters' orders. "Bind yourself to me fully," he said. "Not as a watcher. As mine." Before she could answer, a market girl ran up, breathless. She had heard talk in the lower streets. Strangers had entered the city three nights ago. They asked for the man who bled for the tree. They carried no shadows in the sun. Adrean's blood went cold. Gods walked his city. He had buried his power so deep he never sensed them come. Aphrodisia's face changed. "That was not part of my orders," she whispered. "Someone else sent them."
