Chapter 1

Amphitrite wanted the crown to land on Triton's head and stay there. That was the trouble. The nobles would not keep it there unless her son earned it, and today Poseidon meant to force the matter. He had summoned the whole court to his palace before he left for Olympus, and he would name Triton heir in front of all of them. She stood beside her husband at the top of the gold stairs. Below her, the palace hall filled with the great families of the sea. Mermaids and mermen in shimmering scales pressed close, their fins stirring the water. They watched her son instead of her. She felt their doubt like a cold current. "The ocean agrees," Poseidon said. "It does not obey. Remember that." He said it to the room, but his eyes were on Triton. Then he set the terms. He would crown Amphitrite Queen Regent. He would name Triton heir. And he would make every noble swear fealty to both. Triton drifted forward when his name was called. He did not bow. "I didn't ask for this today," he said, flat. "But I'll take the seat. Or— I'll take what I'm owed." A few fins stopped moving. Amphitrite saw the nobles glance at one another. They remembered his parties. They remembered him arriving drunk to council. No cheering came, only a thin silence. Rhode cut through it. She swam up with her sun-crown bright and her gold trident in hand. "He backed my peace with the surface when none of you would," she told the court. "That took more nerve than any of you have shown." The nobles had called her a traitor for that same plan. Now her words landed on Triton's side. Kymopoleia came next, pale and quiet. "I will swear," she said. "Not for the crown. For him." She did not look at her father when she said it. Amphitrite knew the grief her daughter carried, the marriage she never wanted. For her to kneel now cost her something real. Amphitrite watched the room shift. One daughter vouched for Triton with courage. One daughter vouched for him through pain. Two seats of real weight, given freely. That was the achievement the court could not argue with. Her son had not won it with speeches. His sisters had handed it to him. "Swear," Poseidon said. The nobles bent, one family after another. Amphitrite felt the crown settle on her own head and the oaths rise toward her son. It was done. Triton was heir, sworn to by his sisters and the court. But she saw what Poseidon did not. Triton's face had gone tight. He had wanted to earn this alone. Instead his sisters had carried him. As the hall emptied, he turned to his mother. "They swore to them," he said. "Not me." Then he swam out before she could answer.
