Chapter 2

Triton was heir, but the court still whispered. Amphitrite heard it in the palace halls, in the pause before nobles bowed. Her son held the title, not their belief. She knew what Poseidon would say. The ocean agrees, it does not obey. Belief had to be won, not granted. So she called the great families to the palace one last time, and she gave her son a true test. She gripped her trident and faced the gathered court. "A sickness spreads through the eastern reefs," she said. "The fish flee. The coral dies. My son will go and heal it alone. No sister will speak for him this time." The nobles traded looks. Here was the thing they wanted. Proof, not promises. Amphitrite watched Triton's face. For once he did not argue. He went. Three days he worked the dying reefs. Amphitrite did not follow, though it cost her. When he returned, the water behind him moved again. Fish poured through the hall in bright rivers. The coral glowed. He had done it, and done it without help. She felt her chest swell. Now they would see. Triton drifted before the court, tired, his crown crooked. "The reef lives," he said. "Fixed it. The fish are back. So." He waited. The nobles did not cheer. One elder lord spoke, careful and cold. "The prince commands fish. His father commands storms. A healed reef is not a kingdom." Heads nodded around him. They had watched Triton arrive drunk to council. One good deed did not erase it. The silence stretched, and Amphitrite felt it land on her son like a weight. Something in Triton's face closed. He laughed, short and flat. "Right. Of course. I pull a whole reef back from dead and it's— it's not enough. It's never the thing." He looked at his mother. "You wanted proof. I gave you proof. They still don't want me." He did not wait for her answer. He turned and swam out of the hall, fast, toward the city. Amphitrite followed as far as the gate. She found him already gone into the market quarter, where the music started. Lanterns of coral light. A crowd of young Atlanteans gathering around him, laughing, pressing cups into his hands. He let them. He threw his crown to a dancer and spun into the noise. One guard stood at the edge of it all, a young merman with a pink tail, watching the prince with a tightness in his jaw. Ren did not join the party. He only watched, and he did not look happy. Amphitrite stopped at the gate. Her plan had worked and failed at once. Triton passed the test. The court still refused him. And now her son had answered their doubt the only way he knew, by proving every word of it true. She had not lost the throne for him. She had lost him to it.
