Chapter 1

Analla Faestar had dreamed of the black hound for three nights running. Each morning she woke in her circular bed, tangled in dreamcatchers and woven blankets, sure her divine familiar waited somewhere in the grove below the shrine. Every seeker in her tribe bonded with an animal in dreams, then found it in the waking world. Hers was an obsidian hound. She had felt its lonely pull since childhood. Today she would climb to the grove and begin her search. She tied back her platinum hair and pinned her feathered wrap. The grove sat above the white-stone shrine, past the circular ring of carved pillars. There the sap smelled sweetest and the bond hummed strongest under her ribs. She had gone there a hundred times to listen for the hound. But halfway up the shrine steps, she stopped. Something had changed. A growl rolled out from between the trees. Analla crept past the pillars and peered into the grove. A massive hound stood among the roots. Its coat was pure black, its shoulders scarred, its eyes glowing pale blue. It paced the sacred ground like it owned every stone. When it saw her, it lowered its head and snarled. This was no stray beast. It was the very hound from her dreams, and it did not know her. Analla's breath caught. She had expected to find her familiar and feel love, loyalty, a welcome. Instead the animal bared its teeth. It had claimed the one place her bond ran deepest, and it treated her like an intruder. She could run. She could fetch tribe hunters with spears. But hunters would kill it, and killing it would kill her chance at the bond. So she stayed. She lowered herself slowly to her knees on the shrine steps, palms open, and made herself small. "I dreamed of you," she said. Her voice shook. "I have waited my whole life for you." The hound stopped snarling. It cocked its head. She saw then what its scars and its lonely eyes told her plainly. It had never known a kind hand. It did not trust because no one had ever earned its trust. She reached into her satchel and drew out the strip of dried meat she carried for long climbs. She set it on the stone between them and did not move. The hound crept forward, one careful paw at a time. It sniffed the meat. Then it lifted its pale eyes to hers and held them. Something passed between them, warm and sudden, like a cord pulled tight in her chest. The bond. It was real. But the hound did not soften. It snatched the meat, backed away, and settled at the grove's center, watching her. It would not follow. It would not leave. She had found her familiar and confirmed the bond. Now she had to win an animal that had never once been loved.
