Chapter 2

The meat was gone. The hound sat at the grove's center, watching Analla with pale blue eyes. It did not leave. It did not come. She had won the bond but not the beast. Now it waited for her to move, to prove what kind of hand she was. Analla looked at the spear in her grip. Her knuckles ached around the shaft. To the hound, a weapon meant a hunter. A hunter meant pain. She had seen the scars on its shoulders. Someone had already taught it that people brought harm. She made her choice. Slowly, she set the spear down on the shrine stone. It clattered once and went still. The hound's ears flicked forward. Its muscles tightened. She had given up the one thing that could save her if it charged. Then she lowered herself further. She pressed her knees to the cold stone, then her chest, then her cheek. Face down, arms open, she lay flat before the beast. She could not see it now. She could only hear it. Her heart slammed against the shrine floor. A claw scraped rock. Then another. The hound was moving. Toward her. Analla did not lift her head. She breathed slow and stayed limp. The steps came closer, heavy and sure. Hot breath washed over her hair. The hound stood above her. One snap of its jaws would end everything. She held still and trusted the bond humming under her ribs. The breath moved to her neck. It sniffed her ear, her shoulder, the open palm at her side. She felt the wet nose press her skin. A low sound rolled in its chest, not a growl now, but something deeper and unsure. Then a rough tongue dragged across her hand. Analla turned her head. The hound stood over her, pale eyes fixed on her face. It did not snarl. It licked her hand a second time, careful, as if testing whether she would strike. She stayed prone and let it decide. Slowly she lifted one hand and touched its scarred shoulder. The beast flinched but held. Warmth passed between them, the same cord she had felt before, pulled tighter now. She rose to her knees. The hound let her. It stood close, its huge head level with hers, breathing against her cheek. For the first time it did not back away. But when Analla stood fully and stepped toward the shrine steps, the hound stopped. It sat. It would let her touch it here, in the grove, on sacred ground. It would not follow her out. Its eyes said the grove was safe and the world beyond was not. Analla looked down at her bare hand, still wet from its tongue. She had a familiar who trusted her touch but not her path. To lead it home, she would need something more than her body on the ground. She would need to give it a reason to leave the only place it had ever felt safe.
