Chapter 1

Antheia Calliope pressed her thumb to the empty space above her wrist, where the soul-binding mark waited. The tattoo had run down both her arms for a thousand years, vines and petals inked by the gods themselves. But one line stayed blank. That line was meant for a beloved. To seal it, she had to mark his skin and bind his soul to hers across every life. She had never found him. The gap on her arm itched like a wound that would not close. So she built a snare out of beauty. All evening she lit the pavilion where the lanterns hung in rows. Twinkling lights threaded the carved wood, and painted butterflies clung to the rails. Her moonstone ring sat cold on her finger. She knew the stone would blaze if her true beloved ever drew near. Tonight she filled the pavilion with strangers and watched the ring for any spark. Her black cat curled on the floor and flicked his tail at every guest. Her white dove paced the railing, tail dragging like spilled stars. Antheia moved through the crowd in her white dress, flowers woven through her braid. She offered wine. She laughed at jokes. She touched a dozen hands and checked the ring each time. Nothing. The stone stayed dull and gray. By midnight the guests thinned. Her plan had failed. The blank line on her arm still ached, and now she had no one left to test. She walked out past the lanterns, toward the radiant tree shaped like a giant sunflower. Its golden petals threw a rainbow sheen across the dark. She pressed her forehead to the glowing bark and let the failure settle in her chest. A voice spoke behind her. "That tree only blooms for someone who's lost something." Antheia turned. A man stood there, dirt on his boots, a traveler's pack on one shoulder. He had not come to her gathering. He had wandered in off the road, drawn by the light. He looked at her like he already knew her face from somewhere he could not name. Then the ring flared. The moonstone burned white, bright enough to cast shadows on his cheek. The blank line on her arm went hot. Antheia gasped and gripped her wrist. The cat sat up. The dove went still. "You feel that too," she said. It was not a question. The man pressed a hand to his own chest, confused and afraid. "I don't know what this is." "I do." Antheia's heart recognized him the way a lock knows its key. Here was the one her mark had waited a thousand years for. Relief and terror rose together. Because finding him was only the beginning. Now she had to bind him before he ran, and he did not yet know her name, or what she meant to carve into his skin.
