Chapter 2

The moonstone still glowed on Antheia's hand. The man stood where he was, one hand pressed to his chest. He had felt the same heat she had. Any wrong word would send him back to the road. She had waited a thousand years for this face, and now her mouth held no words worth saying. So she said nothing. She turned and walked toward the sound of falling water. "Come. You should wash the road off your hands." He followed. She led him past the lanterns to a waterfall that spilled blue and green light into a still pool. Glowing flowers ringed the water. He stopped at the edge and stared. "I've walked a long way," he said. "I've never seen water like this." "Sit," she said. "Just rest." Her black cat trotted out of the dark and leaped onto the flat stone beside him. The cat's green eyes caught the light. He pressed his head against the man's knee and purred. The man laughed, surprised, and scratched the soft fur. Some of the fear left his shoulders. Antheia watched the cat choose him. She knelt by the pool and cupped the glowing water in her hands. She did not speak of marks or rings or a thousand years. She asked small things. His name was Elian. He had left a village three days back. He did not know where the road led. "What did you lose?" she asked. "The tree only blooms for that." He was quiet. The cat climbed into his lap. "I don't know," he said at last. "Something I can't name. I've felt it missing my whole life." He looked at her. "Since I saw you, the feeling stopped." Antheia's breath caught. She had not pushed. She had only sat, and he had come to the edge of the truth on his own. The blank line on her arm throbbed, warm now, not burning. She did not reach for it. She let the silence hold. "Then stay the night," she said. "Wash. Eat. Decide in the morning." He nodded slowly. The cat kneaded his leg. "All right," Elian said. "One night." Relief flooded her. She had not frightened him off. She had found the words by using almost none. He would sleep under her roof. He would not run before dawn. But as she rose, a new weight settled in her chest. One night was all he had promised. By morning he would want answers. She would have to tell him what she was, and what the empty line on her arm meant to do to his skin. The gentle silence that had kept him here could not survive that truth. She had bought herself a single night, and now she had to decide how much of herself to show before it ran out.
