Chapter 8

Ashley found her parents waiting at the kitchen table. Danny sat with his phone face-up, a yellow notepad beside it. He was the town's most careful accountant, and he had already written three lines of notes about the principal's call. Mandy stood behind him, one hand on his shoulder. The house felt quiet and wrong. "They scheduled a hearing," Danny said. He pushed the notepad toward Ashley. "Tomorrow, before classes. The principal wants to review whether you belong on council. He mentioned your arm." His finger tapped the word he had underlined twice. "That's the part he kept coming back to." Ashley's stomach dropped. "So he already decided. He just wants to make it official." "Then don't let him talk first," Mandy said. She pulled out a chair and sat close. Mandy was the kind of woman who drew every eye in a room, but right now she only looked at her daughter. "Ashley, I spent years telling you to stop hiding. You finally did. Don't hide tomorrow either. Walk in and make them say it out loud." Ashley looked at her bone arm on the table. The white fingers curled and straightened. "Say what?" "That they're removing you for your arm," Danny said. He was boring, but he was precise, and precision was what she needed. "That's not a rule. There's no rule against it. I read the whole council handbook tonight." He slid a printed page across the table. One line was highlighted. "Members can only be removed for missing meetings or breaking conduct rules. You've done neither." Ashley picked up the page. Her hand shook. "He won't say the real reason. He'll dress it up." "Then make him choose," Mandy said. "Either he names a real rule you broke, or he admits it's the arm. He can't do both." Morning came fast. Ashley walked into the principal's office with the handbook page folded in her pocket. The principal spread papers across his desk and started listing concerns. A hallway scene. A distraction. A question of fitness. "Which rule did I break?" Ashley asked. He paused. "It's a matter of judgment." "That's not a rule." She set the highlighted page on his desk. "I've missed no meetings. I've broken no conduct rule. The report against me was dropped. So tell me the real reason." She laid her bone arm flat on the wood, fingers spread. "Is it this?" The principal stared at the arm. His mouth opened. Nothing came out. He looked at the door, where two teachers stood watching. He could not say it in front of them. "You keep your seat," he said finally. He gathered his papers fast. "This matter is closed." Ashley walked out with her seat and her arm both intact. But in the hall, students were whispering. One held up a phone. Someone had recorded the whole thing through the office window, and the video was already spreading.
