Chapter 9

The video spread fast. By the end of the week, Ashley couldn't cross the hall without someone lifting a phone. They stared at her bone arm. They whispered behind cupped hands. When Mike met her at her locker, a group nearby stopped talking and just watched. He took her hand anyway. She pulled back. "Not here," she said. "They won't stop looking." She went home tired of being a show. Her parents were in the kitchen. Danny sat with a notepad and a coffee mug, careful as always. Ricky leaned against the counter, arms crossed over his flannel shirt. He was her mom's friend, the big lumberjack who fixed things around the house. Mandy stood between them, and the room felt full of grown-ups waiting. "Every day it's worse," Ashley said. "They gawk. They whisper. I can't even hold Mike's hand." Ricky spoke first. His voice was low and easy. "You want them to stop staring?" He shrugged one thick shoulder. "Then quit giving them a mystery. A hidden thing is interesting. A boring thing isn't." Danny looked up from his notepad. "He's right. People stare at what they don't understand." He tapped his pen. "Explain it once, out loud, and there's nothing left to whisper about." Mandy sat beside her daughter. "You already stopped hiding. Now finish it. Show them it's just your arm." Ashley thought all night. The next morning she found the student council email list and typed a short message. She was hosting an open table at lunch. Anyone with questions about her arm could come ask. At noon she sat alone at a table in the cafeteria. Mike stood behind her chair. For a moment nobody moved. Then a freshman walked up, red-faced, and asked if it hurt. "No," Ashley said. She held out the bone hand and wiggled the fingers. "It works fine. It's just made of this." More students came. One asked if she was born that way. "Yes." One asked to see it move again. She showed them. A boy asked how she typed. She showed him that too. The questions ran out faster than she expected. Once they could look all they wanted, looking got boring. By the time the bell rang, the table had cleared. Kids walked past without slowing. The mystery was gone, and so was the crowd. Mike sat down beside her. He reached for her bone hand. This time she let him take it. Nobody turned. Nobody lifted a phone. Two students glanced over, then kept walking. "See," Mike said. "Just us now." Ashley squeezed his hand. The staring was over. But as they walked out together, she saw a girl by the door watching Mike, not her arm. The girl's eyes followed him down the hall, and Ashley felt something new tighten in her chest.
