Chapter 11

The meadow shut behind them. Aster held the sealed canister to her chest and ran back through the closing poppies with Cosmo at her side. Only when they reached the edge did she stop and look at the metal in her hands. The glow inside had already dimmed a shade. Six years of work sat locked in there, and home was days of hard trail away. "It's fading," Aster said. She turned the canister. The pollen light pulsed weak against the seam. "It won't last the walk. I can feel it dying in here." Cosmo studied the canister. He was the old baker from her street, the one who left cardamom rolls on stoops and had come this far only to sing a flower open. He had done his part. Now he pressed a thumb to the small grille on the canister's side. "It kept warm because the bloom sang," he said. "Sound held it awake." Aster remembered how the poppies had opened to his voice. The pollen needed that. It needed the song to stay alive. But she could not make Cosmo sing for three days straight, and her own throat would give out in an hour. She set the canister down and knelt beside her pack. Then she saw it, waiting where the newt had led them out: a small trapezoid cart, lifted on a bed of shimmering moss that never touched the ground. Someone had built it for exactly this. Strapped inside stood a bright yellow refrigerator wrapped in painted flowers and moss, its surface flecked with drifting gold. "A cold box," Aster said. She opened the door. Inside, faint chimes rang, soft and steady, a tune with no player. The sound moved the same way Cosmo's voice had moved the poppies. "It sings on its own." She fit the canister into the humming chest and shut the door. Through the seam she watched the glow steady, then brighten. The dimming stopped. The chimes fed the pollen the song it needed, and the cold held it firm. Cosmo let out a slow breath. "That will carry it," he said. "All the way." Aster loaded the fridge onto the moss cart and gripped the handle. The cart rolled light as a leaf, floating over root and stone. Her prize was safe. She had solved the thing that could have ruined everything. But the newt did not lead them now. It sat still at the trailhead, its glowing tail dark, its work finished at the bloom. Aster looked at the cart, then at the woods stretching back the way she had come. The compass in her pack still read the scattered air. The marked trail behind her was a dead end. She had the pollen. She had a cart to carry it home. What she did not have was a way back through the groves alone.
