Chapter 3

The greenhouse panels buckled outward during the night. Aureli found them at dawn, warped from internal pressure and leaking sulfurous green mist through the sealed edges. The fast-growing vines they had planted were thriving beyond anything natural. At the base of the door, where mist pooled thickest, the vines had twisted themselves into a massive hand shape, five thick tendrils clawing upward like fingers trying to escape the earth. Whatever the fossil was doing to the soil, it was accelerating growth at a dangerous rate. Aureli needed to contain it before the transformation became visible from the landing zone. They ordered construction materials diverted from the main marketplace foundation. Workers erected a domed structure around the greenhouse, painting it in bright colors and filling a square moat with carnivorous Venus flytraps imported from their home system. The building looked like a botanical attraction now, whimsical enough to draw curious eyes away from what it concealed. Aureli carved a stone figure and dressed it in living flowers, training the blooms to grow across the greenhouse entrance in thick curtains. The statue became a focal point, beautiful enough to distract from the sealed door behind it. By evening, the site looked deliberate instead of desperate. The mist stopped seeping. Aureli checked the greenhouse seals and found the vines had woven themselves into the gaps, creating an airtight barrier from the inside. The hand-shaped growth at the entrance had hardened into a woody sculpture, its fingers frozen mid-reach. The accelerated growth had stabilized. The fossil was still active, still changing everything it touched, but the plants themselves were containing the reaction. Aureli stood before the flower-covered statue and understood what they were seeing. The ecosystem was adapting to protect itself. Aureli opened the water lines to the new structure and planted seeds around the moat's edge. The marketplace would open with a living secret at its center, one that could defend itself if given the resources it needed. They had bought time, but more than that, they had learned something crucial. The plants weren't just commodities to be traded. They were allies in this work, and they would fight to survive just as fiercely as Aureli would. The fossil site was no longer just a hidden danger. It was the foundation's beating heart, and Aureli would build everything else around it.
