Chapter 1

Aureli Botanni stood at the edge of the half-built marketplace, watching a ship descend through the contested zone's flickering boundary markers. The vessel was small, unmarked, and landing without clearance. Aureli's antennae curled slightly inward. No one came here by accident. The stranger emerged carrying an ornate chest. They set it down between stacks of building materials and opened the lock. Inside, dozens of luminous plants glowed soft green against the darkness. The stranger gestured to the collection, then reached beneath the display and drew out something wrapped in black cloth. When the cloth fell away, Aureli's breath caught. A shadow rose. Petals formed from shifting darkness, impossibly delicate. It shouldn't exist outside the Veiled Gardens, and those had been destroyed three generations ago. Aureli stepped closer. The marketplace needed rare specimens to draw traders from all twelve systems. This single plant could anchor everything. But sulfurous green mist curled at the edges of the landing zone, threading between the construction frames. Aureli recognized it from briefings. Combat smoke. The kind that preceded boarding actions. The stranger's smile never wavered. Aureli looked at the shadow rose, then at the mist creeping closer. They turned back toward the half-built greenhouse where their own seeds waited in careful rows. The decision had already been made. "I'm not interested," Aureli said. The stranger's expression flickered. The ship's engines began to hum. Aureli walked away as the vessel lifted off, taking the impossible flower with it. The mist dissolved as quickly as it had appeared. The marketplace would grow without bait.

Chapter 2

The excavation crew arrived three days ahead of schedule. Aureli stood beside the foundation pit, watching workers dig trenches for the marketplace's water recycling system. The work was loud and steady. By midday, they would be ready to lay pipes. The drill hit something solid at three meters down. The foreman signaled a halt. Workers cleared dirt by hand, revealing purple crystal formations that curved upward like broken teeth. Wildflowers had already begun sprouting from the exposed edges, bright yellow petals pushing through stone. At the center, half-buried in crystallized resin, sat a fossilized fruit the size of a child's head. Inside the translucent yellow shell, a bee hung suspended. Its wings were striped in colors no living species carried. Aureli's antennae went rigid. They knew exactly what this was. Genetic material from a pollinator extinct for four hundred years. The workers were already talking. Word would spread before sunset. Every faction in contested space needed what was locked inside that fossil. The Syndicate would weaponize the genetics. The Compact would hoard it for their agriculture worlds. The Fringe colonies would sell it to the highest bidder. Aureli knelt beside the pit and ran one hand along the purple crystal edge. They could rebury it. Pretend the drill never broke through. But the marketplace needed credibility, and this discovery would bring every trader in twelve systems to their door. The cost would be protection they didn't have. Aureli ordered the workers to build a greenhouse over the site before nightfall. They used prefabricated panels meant for the main structure, locking them together in a small building that covered the excavation entirely. Aureli planted fast-growing vines along the entrance and rooted them with water from their own supply. By morning, the door would be hidden beneath green leaves. It wouldn't stop a determined search, but it would buy time. Aureli placed their own seeds in the soil around the fossil, committing to the only path forward. The marketplace would open with the greatest treasure in contested space buried at its heart, and Aureli would need to find protection before anyone realized what lay beneath their feet.

Chapter 3

The greenhouse panels buckled outward during the night. Aureli found them at dawn, warped from internal pressure and leaking sulfurous green mist through the sealed edges. The fast-growing vines they had planted were thriving beyond anything natural. At the base of the door, where mist pooled thickest, the vines had twisted themselves into a massive hand shape, five thick tendrils clawing upward like fingers trying to escape the earth. Whatever the fossil was doing to the soil, it was accelerating growth at a dangerous rate. Aureli needed to contain it before the transformation became visible from the landing zone. They ordered construction materials diverted from the main marketplace foundation. Workers erected a domed structure around the greenhouse, painting it in bright colors and filling a square moat with carnivorous Venus flytraps imported from their home system. The building looked like a botanical attraction now, whimsical enough to draw curious eyes away from what it concealed. Aureli carved a stone figure and dressed it in living flowers, training the blooms to grow across the greenhouse entrance in thick curtains. The statue became a focal point, beautiful enough to distract from the sealed door behind it. By evening, the site looked deliberate instead of desperate. The mist stopped seeping. Aureli checked the greenhouse seals and found the vines had woven themselves into the gaps, creating an airtight barrier from the inside. The hand-shaped growth at the entrance had hardened into a woody sculpture, its fingers frozen mid-reach. The accelerated growth had stabilized. The fossil was still active, still changing everything it touched, but the plants themselves were containing the reaction. Aureli stood before the flower-covered statue and understood what they were seeing. The ecosystem was adapting to protect itself. Aureli opened the water lines to the new structure and planted seeds around the moat's edge. The marketplace would open with a living secret at its center, one that could defend itself if given the resources it needed. They had bought time, but more than that, they had learned something crucial. The plants weren't just commodities to be traded. They were allies in this work, and they would fight to survive just as fiercely as Aureli would. The fossil site was no longer just a hidden danger. It was the foundation's beating heart, and Aureli would build everything else around it.
