Chapter 43

The city had settled. The grain lords paid their tax. The lower quarter trusted their king. Bailey should have felt done. Instead he woke each night with the same fear. He knew the truth of what he was now. He knew his mother had marked him, that he had drowned and returned, that the swamp itself had once called him son. But no page held it. No stone kept it. When he died, the whole story would die with him. He called Rook to the throne room at dawn. The scribe came stumbling, arms loaded with scrolls that slid and spilled across the floor. One scroll near the top hissed and rewrote its own ink as it fell. Rook grabbed at it and lost two more. "Sire, if this is another tax, I warn you, the ledgers are already fighting me." "Not a tax," Bailey said. "A record. My record. Everything I am, from the first breath to now. I want it written and kept where no fire or flood can reach it." Cora leaned against the far pillar, arms crossed. The black totem was gone from her neck now. "You've never wanted people to know," she said. "You bound the swamp in front of the whole city and hated their fear." "That's why it has to be true," Bailey said. "Not a rumor. Not a legend that grows teeth. The real thing." Tyrek stood at the door, hand near his blade out of habit. "People will use it," he warned. "A written truth is a weapon. Someone always wants to twist it." "Then let them read the real one first," Bailey said. Crane spoke from the shadows. The old marshal had served a lying King for a thousand years. "I buried more truth than any man alive," he said. "Write it down, sire. I'll guard the vault myself." So they began. Bailey talked and Rook wrote. He told of the drowned baby, the mother's mark, the hundred years of leading children through reeds. He told of Malachar, of the seal, of the swamp that finally rested. Rook's pen shook. Each spell-scroll he owned tried to shout over the tale, but this page stayed quiet. It did not rewrite itself. It simply held. By nightfall the record was done. Cora read it once, slow, and pressed her hand flat against the last line. "It's you," she said. "All of it." Crane sealed the pages in a locked case and carried them to the deep vault below the palace. Bailey watched the door close. For the first time the answers about his origin lived somewhere outside his own chest. If he died tomorrow, the truth would remain. He slept without waking that night. In the morning a guard brought word. Copies had begun to spread. A tavern keeper in the lower quarter read Bailey's story aloud to a full room, and the people did not run. They listened. And none asked questions. It was finished. The truth was there for all to see.
