Chapter 44

The record was done. The city read it and did not run. Bailey should have felt free. Instead a new question crept in. He had written his mother's story so it would never be forgotten. But reading it back, a line stopped him cold. The drowned baby. The child who did not rise. Rook had written it plain: the babe died in the swamp and was returned. Bailey read those words at dawn and could not stand. If that child died, then who breathed now? Was he the same boy, or a copy the swamp had shaped from mud and grief? He called them to the vault. Cora came first, wand cracked in her hand, robe still stained with old potions. Tyrek followed, blade at his hip, jaw tight. Crane waited by the sealed case he had guarded all night. Rook trailed last, scrolls sliding from his arms, one hissing new ink onto the floor. "Read the line again," Bailey said. "The one about the baby." Rook fumbled a page. "The babe drowned and did not wake. The mother returned him with the swamp's mark." He looked up, pale. "Sire, it is only what you told me." "Then tell me," Bailey said. "Am I him? Or did he die and leave me here wearing his face?" The vault went quiet. Crane frowned. Tyrek shifted his weight. It was Cora who crossed the floor and took Bailey's hand. She pressed it flat, the way she had pressed her own hand to the last line of his record. "You held me when we were children," she said. "You traded the sound of my laugh to the water to keep your whole self. A copy would not have paid that." Her voice did not shake. "I searched four years for you. I would know if my brother came back a stranger. He didn't." Tyrek nodded slow. "You pulled me from the reeds when I was dying. Whatever crawled out of that swamp, it chose to save people for a hundred years. That's not nothing wearing a face. That's a man." Bailey looked at the sealed case. He had feared the record proved him hollow. Now he saw it proved the opposite. The baby drowned. But the boy who returned had loved, chosen, sacrificed, and remembered. Death had passed through him once and left him still himself. "I never stopped being me," Bailey said. The words came steady. "The swamp gave me back. It did not replace me." Crane laid a hand on the case. "Then the record is true, sire. And so are you." Bailey took the pen from Rook and wrote one final line beneath the last. He did not drown into nothing. He drowned and came home. He signed it Colton. The doubt that had woken him each night was gone. He was the same boy who had walked out of the water, and he always had been.
