Chapter 133

By dusk the hunters were gone, but Ben knew they would circle back. The burned house had fooled them once. It would not fool them twice. His coin and the fox sat under the chimney stone, safe for now. But the coin was his whole reward, eleven pieces earned across a hundred hard days. He would not leave it in a scorched shell that any bored rider might poke through. He waited until full dark. Then he crossed the char floor to the chimney stone. The fox watched him with flat ears. He lifted the sack of coin and weighed it in his hand. Too heavy to run with. Too loud if it clinked. He needed a way to carry it that no one would search. On a shelf near the sill sat things the fire had spared. A cracked cup. A tin plate. And a small painted figure, a blue cat with gold lines and a jeweled brow, the kind a family sets on a mantel. Ben picked it up. It was hollow. The base twisted off in his hand. He understood then. Locals thought this place cursed. They walked past its trinkets without a glance. A pretty charm on a burned shelf drew no eyes. He poured coin into the cat's hollow belly until it was full, then packed the rest in his coat lining. He twisted the base back on and set the figure among the other junk. Outside, gravel shifted. Ben froze. A rider had come up the rise, quiet, testing the ground the others had skipped. Ben pressed flat against the black wall. The horse stopped at the doorway. A lantern swung inside. Its light crossed the shelf, the cracked cup, the blue cat. The rider stepped in. Boots crunched char. Ben held the fox's mouth shut in the straw. The lantern rose. The man's eyes moved over the shelf, over the little grinning cat with its jeweled brow, and slid on. He kicked a fallen beam, cursed the ash on his boots, and turned back to his horse. Ben did not breathe until the hoofbeats faded down the rise. He came off the wall and lifted the painted cat again. The coin inside did not shift. The man had looked straight at his whole fortune and seen a child's toy. He wrapped the figure in straw and slid it into the sack beside the fox. The burned house was burned through now, a place hunters would return to at first light with better lanterns. He could not stay. But he could carry his coin in plain sight, hidden inside something no one wanted. He stepped out under the pines with the sack on his shoulder. The fox rode quiet. The eleven pieces were sold, the coin was his, and it now traveled disguised as a mantel charm. Where he would spend it, and who would still hunt him for it, he did not yet know.
