Chapter 145

The cart rolled north through the dark. Ben kept the box on his knees and the fox curled beside it. He did not know the driver's name. He did not know if this stranger meant to sell him or save him. One wrong guess and he lost everything at the coast. He needed a test before they reached open ground. At a bend the driver stopped to water the wheels' axle. Ben climbed down and looked in the cart bed. He saw a loud crate plastered with warning labels and paint. It rattled with junk. Beside it sat a sleek metal case with an orange latch and a battered old chest bound in black iron. Cover for real cargo, or the driver's whole trade. Ben could not tell which. He made a plan. He would name a false meeting spot at the coast and watch what the driver did with it. A plant would carry the word ahead. A true carrier would not care. He also carried his own quiet test. From his sack he drew his mother's carved box, the one with the drooping, mournful face. He set it near the driver's feet. If this stranger worked for the herbalist, he might know its purpose and flinch. The driver glanced at the sad-faced box. "Keepsake?" he asked. He nudged it aside with his boot and kept greasing the axle. No flinch. No greed. He did not know what it was. Ben said the buyer waited at a north dock, past the fish sheds. A lie. He watched the driver's hands. The man did not reach for a whistle. He did not mark the road. He only grunted and climbed back up. "You test everyone?" the driver said. He pulled a folded paper from the metal case and handed it down. It was a cargo manifest, stamped, three seasons old. "I move goods no one claims. Stolen relics, dead men's chests, things that hum. I don't ask what's inside and I don't tell. That's the whole trade. You want a friend, buy a dog." Ben read the manifest. Real ink. Real wear. A man who feared the herbalist would have hidden it. This one used it as proof. The fox pressed against Ben's leg, calm, the way it went calm around safe ground. It had chosen this cart on purpose. Ben decided to trust it. He pocketed the false dock. "The real meeting's south of the sheds," he said. "Old salt house." The driver nodded. "Then we go south of the sheds." He snapped the reins. Ben sat back. He had made his choice. The stranger was a carrier, not a plant. But the trust cut both ways now. He had told this man the true meeting place. If he had read the driver wrong, he had just handed the herbalist his throat. There was no taking the words back. The wheels rolled on toward the coast.
