Chapter 147

The driver counted the coin in the salt house dawn. Twelve pieces rode in Ben's box, the full set at last. But together they hummed louder than any single relic. Ben pressed his ear to the lid and heard it, a thick drone that filled the small room. The cart had no dampening. The coastal run stretched hours ahead, all open road. That sound would carry to every hunter along the water. Joe set down the purse and frowned. "You can't move it like that. They'll hear it a mile off." Ben searched the salt house. Old crates leaned in the corners. A moisture-slicked red vessel sat on a shelf, useless. A woven satchel hung on a nail, its mouth gathered tight. He grabbed it and pushed the box inside. The drone dulled, but not enough. Cloth alone would never hold twelve pieces. Lolly wrung water from her sleeve. She had waded here through the creek. "Wet things swallow sound," she said. "But not for a run this long." Ben looked at the driver's junk chest. He tipped the lid. Inside lay greasing rags, a cracked tea canister, and a small tree-shaped box with a hollow trunk. He remembered the shrine walls that had once killed the hum, and the sap that had sealed his crate. He needed thick, dead weight around the sound. "Give me the rugged crate," Ben said, pointing to a heavy container with iron corners and a hidden panel. "And every rag you carry." The driver hesitated. "That's my strongbox." "You want your coast pay," Ben said. "Then it carries this." Ben worked fast. He nested the satchel and box inside the iron-cornered crate. He packed the gaps with the driver's rags, then Lolly's wet cloth, then handfuls of coarse salt scooped from the floor barrels. The salt pressed cold and dense against every seam. He laid the tea canister and the little tree box on top as filler, jamming the last hollows shut. He closed the panel and set his ear to the wood. Silence. He shoved the crate hard across the floor. Still silence. The driver lowered his ear too. His face changed. "Salt," he said. "Should've thought of it. This place is full of it." "Then we load it," Ben said. They carried the crate to the cart and buried it under the driver's own cargo. Ben climbed up beside the box he could no longer hear. The fox curled at his feet, calm, its ears still. The driver took the reins. "Coast by dusk," he said. He glanced back at the crate. "But I know now. That thing's worth more than you paid me." The cart rolled toward the water. Ben had silenced the full set. He had also just told a smuggler exactly what it was worth.
