Chapter 1

Bo Grizzleback poured the fresh batch into a shot glass and slid it across the bar to Aiden 'Spice' Garcia. The chef sniffed it, sipped it, and set the glass down with a slow shake of his dreadlocks. "Bro. It's clean. It burns. But it tastes like every jug of rotgut off every dust freighter that lands out here." Bo laughed his big laugh, but the sound was thinner than usual. Off-world traders would dock at the port again in three weeks. He wanted them leaving with jugs of Grizzleback moonshine tucked under their arms, telling stories about it two systems over. Right now he had a still full of liquor no one would remember by morning. The bar around him was built to be remembered. Orange glass panels ran floor to ceiling along the front wall, catching the desert sun and throwing hot amber light across the bottles. Southern charm, off-world money — that had been the plan when Bo opened the place. The plan was working, except for the part that mattered most. Aiden leaned on the counter and tapped the empty glass. "You want a signature, you need something nobody else has. Something local. Something weird." Bo already knew it. He'd tried mesquite. He'd tried three kinds of cactus fruit. Every batch came out tasting like the last man's mistake. The door chimed and Esther Greyshell walked in from the heat, straw hat pulled low, a burlap sack in her fist. She dropped the sack on the bar without a greeting. "You asked me to keep an eye out. My cousin's boyfriend found these growing on the north ridge, in the shade under the old rockfall. Nowhere else." Bo opened the sack. Inside were a dozen fat green pods, ribbed like small melons, weeping a pale blue sap where the stems had been cut. The smell hit him — sharp, sweet, a little like anise, a little like something he couldn't name. "Never seen these," he said. Esther sighed as if seeing them was a burden. "Nobody has. The boy says the ridge only fruits after the twin-moon rains. Won't fruit again for two years." She looked at him flat. "So don't waste them, Grizzleback." Bo took one pod to the back and split it with a paring knife. The blue sap ran onto the cutting board and stained the wood. He tasted the tip of his knife and felt the kick land at the back of his throat — cold first, then a slow heat that climbed into his ears. Aiden, watching from the doorway, whistled low. "That's your signature, bro." Bo counted the pods again. Twelve. Enough for one small batch. Enough to make the traders talk, if he got it right. Not enough to make a second bottle for two years. He wiped the knife clean and reached for a mason jar.
